Navigating identity can be especially complex for teens in the LGBTQ+ community, as they face unique challenges and pressures that their peers may not experience. From coming out to family and friends to facing discrimination and bullying, LGBTQ+ teens often grapple with issues of acceptance, self-acceptance, and belonging. For many LGBTQ+ teens, the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance can be full of uncertainty and fear. They may struggle with internalized homophobia or transphobia, as well as societal stigma and prejudice. Additionally, they may feel pressure to conform to heteronormative expectations or hide their true selves out of fear of rejection or harm. At AOC Outreach Services, we recognize the importance of providing affirming and supportive services for LGBTQ+ teens as they navigate their identity. 🏳️🌈 Today, we kick off LGBTQ+ History Month. A month of honouring and recognising the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ history and contributions. This year's theme is medicine and spotlighting the contribution that LGBTQ+ individuals have made in medical history. 🎉 LGBTQ+ communities face several barriers to having a good death, including concerns about: - Discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity, which may lead to the need to conceal one's identity. - Lack of training for care staff in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals, impacting the quality of care provided. - Fear of losing independence and connections to LGBTQ+ spaces and friends. - Concerns about partner inclusion or exclusion in healthcare decisions. - Apprehension about acceptance in hospices affiliated with religious organisations. - Specific concerns among transgender individuals, such as being buried with the wrong name and gender. Let's make this month a vibrant celebration of unity, acceptance, and compassion.

“When anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is introduced, it not only aims to legislate LGBTQ+ people out of all spaces of daily life, it also codifies discrimination and stigma into law.”     The HRC’s latest report shows:  -8 in 10 LGBTQ+ adults feel that gender-affirming care bans worsen harmful stereotypes, discrimination, hate, and stigma  -79% of LGBTQ+ adults say gender-affirming care bans make them feel less safe (this jumps to 94% for transgender and non-binary adults)  -Over 62% of LGBTQ+ adults would refuse to attend school in or move to a state where a gender-affirming care ban was in place    It’s our job as health care leaders to hear what the LGBTQ+ community is saying and help educate others about this virulent attack on patient rights and health equity. Tomorrow is LGBTQ+ Elders Day, an important moment to celebrate the queer and trans elders whose visibility, advocacy, and everyday courage paved the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights nationwide. In recognition of the importance of our elders and how they serve as possibility models for our community, our May research focused on the impact of adult LGBTQ+ role models on LGBTQ+ young people. We found that 67% of LGBTQ+ young people report having at least one older LGBTQ+ adult role model in their lives. Why does this matter? Because having access to an older LGBTQ+ role model is associated with higher levels of self-reported life purpose amongst LGBTQ+ young people. Remember, life is cyclical. We advocate for queer and trans kids to become queer and trans adults — whose visibility will remind the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth that it’s okay to exist as you are. October is LGBTQ+ History, and the Pacific Clinics Public Relations (PR) Team asked a member of our LGBTQ+ Education Advancement and Development of Services (LEADS) Network, what this month means to them. Name: Nikkolson Ang, mental health therapist  Pronouns: He/They PR Team: What does LGBTQ+ History Month mean to you? Nikkolson: LGBTQ+ History Month means a time and space for individuals and groups to reflect on the monumental sacrifices the community has made for the sake of progress. It is a reminder that the path was paved with blood, sweat, and tears to get to where the community is today. It is a reminder that work done now will be a part of this month since the fight is not over, and the lives of those in the LGBTQ+ community continue to be threatened and under attack. PR Team: How will you celebrate/acknowledge this month and share it with colleagues, family members, or friends? Nikkolson: Provide education on activism work throughout history past Stonewall Riots. I also want to bring attention to the current issues the community faces to spur collaboration against oppressive systems in place that disproportionately affect the members of the LGBTQ+ community. 

DID YOU KNOW: 55% of the adult US population identify as LGBTQ+ Allies and 7.1% identify as LGBTQ+. YET: anti-LGBTQ+ mobilization has significantly increased in recent years. Legislation targeting LGBTQ+ rights more than doubled in 2023 and 26 states now have book bans in place banning books with a LGBTQ+ people or themes.  SO: anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric, violence and legislation at the state level are on the rise despite the majority of people supporting LGBTQ+ rights and people. WHY? Because WE (Allies and the LGBTQ+ Community) are not as visible, connected and verbal as the LGBTQ+ hate movement. Bursting Through believes Corporations and Brands are the new community. February is LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK. 🌈 Myself and #TeamNiB celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s efforts to create a more just and inclusive society. The 2024 theme celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today. Individuals living under the “double rainbow” of being LGBTQ+ and neurominorities are an important part of both movements. 🌈 🌈 Did you know... - There are 1.5 million LGBTQ+ people living in the UK as of the 2021 census – the very first time the rainbow community was counted. - ND individuals are statistically more likely than neurotypical people to identify as LGBTQ+. - People who are both LGBTQ+ and ND experience increased mental health challenges and stresses from being part of two (or more) marginalised communities. Key takeaway for corporate DEI programs: Both #Neurodiversity and LGBTQ+ initiatives should make space for members of the other group (and other identities) to support employees in being their authentic selves. Proud to launch my Director of Public Health Report on the last day of LGBT history month about LGBTQ+ health in Croydon. From Question Marks to Understanding- Uncovering the Health and Wellbeing of Our LGBTQ+ community. A video accompanying my report showcases the lives of local people and allies in the LGBTQ+ community, with first-hand accounts of the impact of their experiences. https://lnkd.in/esNeumDq Limited data on the LGBTQ+ community makes it difficult to understand their health and wellbeing needs and the inequalities they face. LGBTQ+ people are more likely than others to feel isolated or lonely. Nationally, one in three LGBTQ+ young people experience mental health difficulties, compared to one in eight in the general population. One in seven LGBTQ+ people avoid treatment for fear of discrimination. There are three key things we can all do to support our LGBTQ+ community. These are to keep questioning our assumptions, actively support their visibility and promote their representation across all areas. #LBGT #publichealth
