🤩 Boeing demonstrated manned-unmanned teaming of a digital F/A-18 Super Hornet and MQ-25 Stingray unmanned aircraft. In a simulator lab, a Boeing-led team virtually demonstrated an F/A-18 pilot commanding the drone to refuel the Super Hornet using existing communications links. “MQ-25 is designed to typically receive commands from air vehicle pilots on an aircraft carrier,” F/A-18 New Product Development lead Alex Ewing explained. “This software will add a second option, enabling pilots to initiate commands right from their cockpit.” The software significantly reduces communication time between the two platforms, offering the pilots greater flexibility in refueling over longer distances. “The goal of the demonstrations was to make MUM-T refueling as real as possible,” Advanced MQ-25 program director Juan Cajigas said. “Aerial refueling is like a ballet as two airplanes come together. I'd like to know more about the training aspects. Gen Wilsbach says most CCA aircraft will stay in storage with only a few flying for training. Does every CCA wing get a few training aircraft? If manned aircraft pilots will fly CCAs will wings have to generate a manned aircraft every time someone needs CCA training? I'll wager CCAs will end up with a remote split operations mode that lets any remote CCA pilot fly any CCA anywhere from anywhere. Will USAFE/NATO CCA pilots stay home but fly CCAs from Nellis or Holloman AFB in wintertime? Fascinating problems! #drones #uas #usairforce

🔛 EDA launched on 24 September the first #EUDefence Innovation Operational Experimentation Campaign with key stakeholders at kick-off meeting in Rome, Italy. The event was hosted by the Italian Army ‘s Multifunctional Experimentation Centre (#CEPOLISPE), in collaboration with the European Hub for Defence Innovation (#HEDI) and the Defence Test and Evaluation Base (#DTEB). This initiative lays the foundations for the first EU Defence Innovation Operational Experimentation Campaign on Autonomous Systems for Cross-Domain Logistics, scheduled for summer 2025. The campaign introduces a new framework at the European level for immersive large-scale field testing of emerging technologies. Through close collaboration between key #defence enablers, i.e. Member States representatives, selected leading military experts, and industry partners, it aims to accelerate the development of disruptive concepts of operation and future technologies. The first edition will focus on Autonomous Systems for Cross-domain Logistics, as Unmanned Aerial Systems (#UAS) and Unmanned Ground Systems (#UGS) have demonstrated their potential as key technologies. The DARPA project has successfully demonstrated AI-controlled dogfighting in a real F-16 jet, marking a significant milestone in the development of autonomous aerial combat capabilities. The trials involved an AI-controlled VISTA aircraft facing off against a human-piloted F-16, with the #AI agent performing well overall, though the specific win/loss ratio was not disclosed due to national security concerns. This achievement is seen as a crucial step towards increasing human trust in autonomous platforms, which the military hopes to deploy in future combat scenarios through initiatives like the Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft program. The project also highlighted the need to address fundamental questions around the certification and safe operation of ML-controlled aircraft, as current regulations do not have a clear pathway for this technology. Looking ahead, the DARPA team plans to demonstrate collaborative dogfighting between human and AI pilots, as well as incorporate the lessons learned into future programs.
