✅ Day 2 of our preparatory course: what are the stakes of the election of the next President of the European Commission? Our students had the chance to meet Yves Bertoncini, who is among the most-recognised French experts on European affairs, to discuss this issue. The second session of our preparatory course delved into the political and geopolitical challenges the EU is facing, as it gets ready for a new round of high-level nominations. The webinar took place in our beautiful online European Council, where the simulation game will be held on 29 and 30 April. Watch this space! #simulation #EuropeanUnion #Parliament2024 #EducEU

Last Saturday I had the amazing opportunity to present our study "Ten ways that Europe could do more for you" during the "Europe Day" event at the European Parliament. Main takeaways - The costs of EU inaction are high. Citizens, civil society and businesses are paying the costs of a weak Europe. They pay for it in terms of lower income and revenues, lower living standards, and lower quality of life. - Europe must step up its game to face new geopolitical realities. More Europe does not imply a reduction in benefits for Member States. EU action could rather enhance the action taken by Member States themselves. - The European elections of 2024 represent an opportunity to define the path of ambitious European joint action. This ambition would mean setting political priorities that meet citizens' needs and strengthening policies at national, regional and local level. European Parliamentary Research Service

Check out this new forum on enlargment and reform of the EU, making EU ’fitfor35’ that we launched
Today, SIEPS launches "Fit for 35 Forum", where experts from research, policy and think tanks present their thoughts on EU reform and enlargement in short texts. First, SIEPS director Göran von Sydow and Political Scientist Dr. Valentin Kreilinger, set the scene for the forum in the first contribution. The forum then opens with a contribution by Erik Jones, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI). He outlines what European policymakers need to consider when committing to enlargement as an investment in peace, security, and stability.

The Council has adopted its strategic agenda to set long-term political priorities until 2029. The agenda will focus on competitiveness, security, and the Rule of law, in contrast to the previous strategic agenda, which focused heavily on emission reductions. The pathway to a competitive Europe is through further deployment of renewables, electrification, and improvements to the grids, which will secure the lowering of energy prices and improve competitiveness. Here, UvdL's "Clean Industrial Deal" could be a tool to ensure both competitiveness and further deployment of renewables. As a Dane, it will be interesting to follow since the Danish companies are at the forefront of combining competitiveness with emission reduction.
