U.S. restaurants reported lower operating hours last year compared with the year before COVID, across the country and regardless of segment, according to a Datassential analysis. Datassential found that U.S. restaurants have reduced their operating hours by an average of 2.6 hours per week in 2023 compared with 2019. This runs counter to a lot of expectations, with most assuming that average open hours would increase after COVID. But persistent economic and industry challenges have caused restaurant operators to make hard choices about when and how long they’re open. Still, there is some reason to feel optimistic. This 2.6-hour average reduction in 2023 is a significant improvement from 2022, when restaurants were open an average of 6.4 fewer hours than in 2019. Interesting conversations today at the International Restaurant & Foodservice show. Consumer behavior patterns are so different today, especially in the NYC market. Chef JJ Johnson of FIELDTRIP sees reduced consumer spending in the local communities surrounding places of work in the post-pandemic, #returntooffice NYC. What were once frequent destinations for lunches and after work dinners or cocktails are now experiencing more “get-in-and-get-out” consumer behaviors. Access to convenient options across a much larger radius via third-party delivery apps has also contributed to this trend. #foodserviceindustry #behavior #trend

Empowering restaurants, staff, AND guests makes for an outstanding dining experience. Today, Fast Company has recognized SpotOn as one of the Most Innovative Companies in the dining category. Here's what they had to say: "SpotOn, a restaurant point of sale and payments system, launched Seat & Send in June 2023, which lets customers on a restaurant’s wait list preorder food and drink to arrive at their table once they’re seated. After joining the list, diners are texted a link to order. It’s a tech-infused time-saver for diners on a tight schedule, parents with hungry children, or anyone who wants their first drink to arrive as soon as they settle into their booth. Speeding up service can help a restaurant turn tables faster, reducing customer wait times. (Having that first round of drinks ready when customers are seated can also lead to a second or third round, boosting average check sizes). Early feedback from restaurants suggests customers leave more satisfied—at one independent restaurant, 5% of orders come through the feature, but tips have increased by 30%. According to the National Restaurant Association, in 2023, 75% of adults would likely use a preorder option if it was offered, including 88% of Gen Z adults." #restaurant #technology #innovation #fastcompany #spoton

Running a restaurant is tough. You have to juggle so many things - managing orders, tracking inventory, dealing with long wait times. It's easy for things to slip through the cracks, leading to unhappy customers🙃. We spoke with John, the owner of a popular brunch spot in town. He told me about the chaos of tracking orders on paper and constantly running back and forth from the kitchen to the front. Things got especially hairy on busy weekends when customers would get frustrated having to wait so long for a table and takeaway order. John started using Turno📲 and it was a game-changer. Now customers can order ahead and get notified when their table or order is ready instead of waiting for a long time. 👨🍳Cooks receive orders instantly so food gets out faster. He can finally focus on giving customers a great experience instead of getting bogged down in logistics. Turno allows restaurants to deliver faster service and ensure no orders get lost in translation. Customers get a streamlined dining experience. It's a win-win for both sides. Unlike other restaurant tech tools, Turno is totally free!🆓 There are no subscriptions or hidden fees to worry about. If your restaurant constantly deals with long wait times and order mix-ups, give Turno a try. It could help transform your operations overnight! This post is for restaurant owners and managers looking for ways to optimize their business operations. Try Turno and see the difference it makes! https://lnkd.in/edx9YHgn #restaurants #restaurantmanagers #food #hospitality

Limited-service restaurants with an Average Star Rating (ASR) of 4.4 or higher enjoy average weekly sales of around $57,000. Meanwhile, those with a 3-star rating or less pull in only $30,000. And for Full-Service restaurants? The gap is even wider. High-rated establishments see weekly sales soar to $100,000 compared to just $30,000 for their lower-rated competitors. Customers are increasingly turning to Google reviews before deciding where to eat. And a strong star rating is essential for building trust and driving foot traffic. Restaurant ratings can make or break a local business.
