Thrings advises on deal to create South West’s biggest new woodland 🤝🌲 A 100,000-tree woodland is set to be established between Bristol and Bath, in a deal advised by Thrings Solicitors. The firm has been advising charity Avon Needs Trees on the creation of their new 422-acre Lower Chew Forest which, once complete, will be the biggest new woodland in the South West for a generation and a major local effort in response to the climate and ecological emergencies. Established in 2019, the Bristol-based charity is dedicated to creating new, permanent woodland across the Bristol-Avon river catchment. The organisation has been responsible for a series of successful projects in Bristol, Bath and Wiltshire, including the 100-acre woodland Great Avon Wood near Whitchurch. At the Lower Chew Forest, Avon Needs Trees plan to establish a new forest of 100,000 trees and shrubs, alongside a mosaic of new habitats including wetlands, a mile of new hedgerows and species-rich grassland. Have you ever wondered where the trees we plant come from? Well, here’s your answer! We source our trees from qualified wholesale nurseries throughout California to ensure we have high quality planting stock with diverse species availability. And once we receive the trees from the nurseries, we give them lots of TLC before we plant them💚. 🌳 We always try to minimize the time the trees spend in the tree yard, and try to give them a luxurious, pampered experience during their stay. This includes securing them to a stake so they don't fall over, maintaining adequate spacing between trees so they get enough sun🌞, and regular irrigation 🚿 to ensure they get the water they need. 🌳 Trees that are particularly undersized or stressed from transport may stay in our yard for longer in order to grow more or to recover. We always try to plant the highest quality stock to get the best outcomes. The project will empower women and smallholder farmers in Bududa, Uganda, by promoting beekeeping and tree growing to combat climate change. 🌳 Typically, farmers in Uganda face a dilemma of choosing between trees and crops. They cut down trees to grow more crops, leading to barren farmlands and landscape degradation. Over 95% of people rely on rain-fed agriculture as their only source of income, making it hard for them to cope with climate change disasters. This often compels them to resort to natural resources like trees and poaching game. So far, we have achieved significant milestones by collaborating with over 120 farmers, providing 100 modern beehives, and planting 3080 bee forage trees, which has already made a significant difference. However, there is still more work to be done! WWF&C's vision calls for protected Massachusetts farmland to increase from its current 1% to 8% by 2060. But, more than 110,000 acres of Massachusetts farmland have been lost to development in the last couple of decades, and that pace is increasing. The state and nonprofit organizations are ramping up to save what is left. David Viale of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, says, "It's really about preserving the rich history that we have here in Massachusetts. Protecting farmland for food security reasons, for economic reasons, quality of life reasons, environmental benefits as well." His agency has launched the first-ever Massachusetts Farmland Action Plan to help stem the tide of land conversion. Other nonprofits, like Land For Good and Berkshire Natural Resources Council are offering farm succession planning support and helping connect new farmers with those beginning to consider retirement. 🌳🚨📣 A message from our CEO 📣🚨🌳 Earlier this week we announced our ambitious fundraising target of £100,000 which will help to realise the largest new woodland the South West has seen for a generation. Our CEO Dave Wood spoke to the press earlier in the week about this once in a lifetime opportunity: "When Wick Farm came onto the market we knew we had to act. It’s very rare for such a large amount of land to come up in one go, particularly somewhere like Compton Dando which is so close to Bristol and Bath, and we know that biodiversity recovery is far more effective across a large area. It really is the biggest opportunity in a generation for us to turn around the critically low percentage of woodland cover in our region, and create a forest-sized woodland. We have just 7.8% woodland cover in the West of England, compared to 13.2% average across the whole of the UK. The benefits of increasing this cover include helping to mitigate climate change, improving biodiversity connectivity and offering a place for people to volunteer, learn and connect with nature.” The potential of the 420 acres is enormous. Much of the land is suitable for woodland creation on a large scale – your donation will help to plant 100,000 trees – whilst the rest lends itself to creating a mosaic of valuable habitats, including wetlands, a mile of new hedgerows and species-rich grassland. The land also provides opportunities to explore regenerative food production and agroforestry.
