Technical Director at DAM

At DAM, we pride ourselves on delivering high quality Coal Mining Risk Assessment and intrusive cored and non-intrusive geophysical investigations where required. Recently we have seen a majority of other consultants move to purely rotary open-hole investigations, relying solely on the on-site driller (and any supervising engineer - often none) to record a loss of flush accurately. We see this as high risk, especially on residential sites. This is especially relevant when considering the 2021 CL:AIRE guidance on mine gas risk and the strong focus Local Authority's are placing on this. So the question is - why as the statutory regulator do The Coal Authority deem these forms of investigation acceptable? Is it simply enough that someone else is taking the risk? I wonder when the first incident will happen because of substandard mining GI? Interested to hear the thoughts of my network... #coalmining #cmra #groundinvestigation #rotary #drilling
