https://lnkd.in/gy7NWqDB Sydney’s new metro promises to reshape the city, cutting travel times and connecting north and south like never before. But with such massive infrastructure comes big questions: Will the metro bridge Sydney’s divides—or deepen them? How will it transform communities and opportunities across the city? What do you think—can infrastructure truly unite a city? I’d like to hear your thoughts below!

Despite faster transport speeds, the Red Queen Effect shows that increased mobility hasn’t improved access to essential services. Modern cities like Atlanta, with extensive car infrastructure, don’t offer better access than historical cities with slower transport. Cars, while speeding up travel, have expanded urban areas and increased energy use and pollution. This is akin to the “Doorman Fallacy,” where focusing narrowly on efficiency misses broader impacts, such as the real value of accessibility. Faster travel doesn’t necessarily mean closer access to important resources. Over the past few months, I have been challenged with master planning in the global city of London as part of a university project. Designing inclusive places is extremely important to me, however I found my approach to be limited by one area - connectivity. Redeveloping a particular area of the city, Stratford, is ultimately limited by how it connects to the wider city. As a result, I produced a research paper analysing how to improve street and public realm safety: "How can safe global city design positively impact pedestrian and cyclist movement networks?" A small, yet critical, project like this has helped expose myself and others to the issues faced in our cities, and how we can learn from places worldwide to enhance streets and public realms! #UrbanDesign #SustainableUrbanDesign #EquitableCities

Underused public land in some of Canada’s largest cities has the potential to create urgently needed affordable housing solutions. The Future Cities Institute is committed to helping cities avoid "lazy land," underutilized spaces like large vacant lots, sprawling parking areas, or low-density developments with one or two-storey buildings. By leveraging data-driven urban modelling, innovative design strategies, and multi-sector collaboration, we aim to transform these spaces into vibrant, functional, and inclusive hubs of activity and opportunity.
