Australians deserve an opportunity to reflect on their vision for our nation in the years to come. It is time for a national conversation on the what our nation ought to look like especially in regard to our democracy. This is a discussion that ought to be facilitated by the Commonwealth government. #democracy #republic #constitution #engagement #discussion #vision #Australia #auspol

MONDAY IS A TIME TO CONSIDER REPUBLIC AND WIDER REFORM Monday’s public holiday in most of Australia formally marking King Charles III’s birthday is an ideal opportunity for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to clarify his plans for constitutional reform. Chair of the Real Republic Australia, David Muir, says: “We should respect King Charles for the position he occupies as our Head of State under the current Australian Constitution, just as most Australians respected the late Queen Elizabeth II. “But that doesn’t prevent us from discussing ways to use the democratic processes available to us through a future referendum to transition our nation to a republic with its own genuinely directly elected Head of State. “Unfortunately the Albanese Government has set out no coherent plan to achieve that goal, or to detail how it might achieve other beneficial constitutional changes.” READ MORE ON OUR WEBSITE: https://lnkd.in/g9jCwzSx #Aus #Auspol #Auspol2024 #AusRepublic #Republic

It should also be a time to reflect on the country and systems we have in place that make Australia one of the worlds leading democratic nations. Our instutions, language, justice, customs and form of government all derive from the UK with the crown at the centre. Those that advocate for change would do well to observe the great republics like the United States and of course France who operates under the Fifth Republic, why because the first four attempts failed.
