The cost of the flight itself is only a fraction of the entire journey cost, when you add on fuel to get to the airport and parking (none of the airports these budget airlines use have any decent public transport infrastructure, that’s why the car park charges at places like HHN and FKB are so extortionate) then the cost starts approaching the level of a train ticket but with additional hassle you get at airports.

There is also a huge potential for more freight transport by train in Europe where now also there is a lack of international infrastructure. Freight could help pay off the investments even quicker :-)
