The Board of Debswana, the 50:50 diamond mining joint venture between De Beers Group and the Government of the Republic of Botswana, today announced it had approved investment for the next key development phase of the Jwaneng underground project, paving the way for the world’s most valuable diamond mine to transition from open pit to underground operations. The ~$1 billion investment in this phase of works, known as the Exploration Access Development Phase, will contribute to the development of essential infrastructure to support forthcoming stages of the project.   Our CEO and Debswana Deputy Board Chairman, Al Cook, said: "Jwaneng stands proudly as the world’s greatest diamond mine. It is a central pillar of both the Botswana economy and the De Beers Group business. The global supply of natural diamonds is falling, so moving forward with the Jwaneng Underground Project creates new value for investors, brings new technology to the country, creates new skills for our workforce and provides new gems for customers around the world. This investment is aligned with our strategy to prioritise investments in the highest quality projects. With only 16% of Tanzania surveyed so far, the potential for significant mineral discoveries is immense, paving the way for substantial economic growth and opportunities. Hon. A Breakthrough: The Unique CIP/CIL Business Model in Tanzania To address the specific needs of Tanzania's artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, an innovative model of renting CIP (Carbon-in-Pulp) and CIL (Carbon-in-Leach) plants has emerged. In large-scale mining, companies typically own and operate their own processing infrastructure to extract gold from ore. However, in small-scale operations, this is often not the case. Many miners or small mining companies lack the facilities and therefore rent them from plant owners. This model, though innovative, presents significant design and technical challenges. It can be difficult to install a plant that can efficiently process ores with varying grades and mineral properties from various localities. Additionally, the lack of skilled expertise to operate these plants remains a critical issue. Despite these challenges, this model represents a significant breakthrough. It enhances production and profitability compared to traditional methods like mercury amalgamation, making it a promising step forward for the ASGM sector in Tanzania. #gold #mercury_free_gold #Tanzania #ASGM

Malawi hosts several critical mineral deposits and a number of early-stage exploration and mining projects have drawn the attention of major global mining companies. WhyAfrica will visit Malawi next month on Leg 3 of our 2024 WhyAfrica Road Trip to find out how far the country has come in terms of positioning itself as a significant African mining destination.     One of the projects in the landlocked country of Malawi that has caught the attention of global mining majors is Australian listed Sovereign Metal’s Kasiya Rutile-Graphite project, about 75km from Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe. Earlier this month Sovereign Metals announced that the pilot site construction for the ongoing pilot mining and land rehabilitation program (Pilot Phase) at Kasiya is on schedule with groundworks underway. Key contractors and consultants have been appointed across all major disciplines essential for the pilot phase. ·      Multinational engineering and construction company Mota Engil Group has been appointed to perform all excavation required for site establishment, the water storage pond, the test pit, seven rehabilitation pits site closure and general rehabilitation of the site. ·      South Africa-based consultancy Fraser Alexander has been contracted to complete the hydraulic mining phase. ·      Backfill, storage and tailings management will be assessed by South African residue management solutions consultancy Epoch Resources ·      International engineering company DRA Global has been appointed to oversee and provide engineering and design services required during the pilot phase. The Mining Indaba 5 – 8 February 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre Today marks the start of the Mining Indaba under the theme “Embracing the power of positive disruption: A bold new future for African Mining”. This is the biggest investment event yet for 2024, with over 900 investors and a little over 8100 attendees expected. The entire African mining value chain will be meeting to discuss investments, the energy transition, financing in the sector, new ways of sustainable mining, technology, health and safety. Namibia will be having its show case at the Convention, discussing “Critical raw material development and the local value addition in the Namibian context” on the 7th of February 2024 at the Westin Hotel. This is going to be a very interesting discussion considering the Indaba’s theme, in some ways as a country we are still playing catch up. Local value addition has been a considerable challenge for Namibia. June 2023 Cabinet took the decision prohibiting the export of some critical minerals, allowing only the export of small quantities at the discretion of the Minister of Mines and Energy. The policy was developed and is being implemented without the establishment of the requisite refineries or smelters and the capacity to add value to the minerals.
