Beware, IMARC selfie overload ahead! The International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) drew over 9000 people this year-a huge number of people working right across the global mining value chain and the event fostered non stop conversations with established colleagues and new connections. For me, this equates to far too many selfies! But more seriously, the conference provides an amazing blend of trade conference powering new economic partnerships, highlighting advanced product development and building customer/supplier relationships. Alongside this, was an incredibly rich program of presentations, panels and round table discussions advancing the very nature of how we think about mining and how the industry is responding to the energy transition, ESG investor expectations and First Nations relationships. A huge acknowledgment here of Sherene Asnasyous who is masterful in her curation of this program and genuine commitment to help every speaker. The discussion of post mining futures through a range of lenses and across the program was great to see, with a special shout out to our CRC TiME speakers Christine Charles, Tom Measham,Agnes Samper and Zane H. and many of our partners who are doing such great things to build better futures. Key messages I took from these conversations: - mining rehabilitation expectations have changed to one that identifies post mine rights and stakeholders as critical to identifying success and achieving relinquishment. - most mines are on the First Nations estate, with the operation of a mine a temporary use from First Nations perspectives, meaning strong partnerships are critical across life of mine to ensure FPIC for both the mine and the legacy it will leave. - an emerging re-use and re-purposing industry is attracting others sectors to want to work on mined land with waste, brownfield land development and infrastructure use opportunities. - the renewable energy sector is placing pressure on land access for mining; attracting projects to legacy or closing sites can reduce this pressure on potential future deposit developments - rehabilitation and legacy is critical in society’s trust for mining and was highlighted in this years Australian community attitudes to mining survey results. - there is incredibly rapid technology development happening to create value from mine ‘waste’ whether in tailings or waste rock or water. A great week and even more to think about!
