My kids are the kids of a chef 👨🍳 and we always knew we'd have to teach them that cooking doesn't come easy. An obvious and important need is knife skills 🔪 and with the right tools, even kids can start to develop them! One way is for kids to first chop with 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 (keep reading) A 𝓌𝒶𝓋𝓎 𝒸𝒽𝑜𝓅𝓅𝑒𝓇, or vertical chopper, lets a child hold the top of the handle with both hands and push down, concentrating the energy downward to chop the food item. They are satisfied by accomplishing the task at hand, with the familiar safety and reassurance of both of their hands. A perfectly supervised activity around age 3, in these #earlyyears they achieve success with their special tool, while they witness you using the ones 𝘆𝗼𝘂 use in 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 way. Having chopped many a carrot and long strip of cheese, at some point each kid asked, “can I try using just one hand?” And at this point, they were both versed in how it feels when chopping occurs, ready to take a next step. ⏭ They’ve honed their skills and confidence in their own hands and minds, and thanks to having the right tool at the right time. Some great foods for little ones to make littler: > Celery > Carrots > Sliced apples > Lettuce wedges > Cheese (cut blocks into strips) > And play dough, of course! If you’re not keen on the wavy cutter, a plastic knife is a great tool for kids to be in control! Have you ever had that lesson in school... The teacher asked you to create a set of instructions for something like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 🥜 🍇 (this was the task our class chose) Then, you had to ask a parent, sibling, friend, or whoever to follow your instructions exactly as you wrote them. It is a sobering, humbling, and pretty hilarious practice. For those who haven't done this, my instructions could say, "Take a slice of bread out of the bag and spread peanut butter on a slice." My sister would then take a slice out of the bag, take the peanut butter container, and slide it back and forth across the bread. I never instructed her to take out a knife and open the jar, stick the knife in the jar, etc. You get the idea. Why do I bring this up? I recently used this exercise when considering navigation tutorials, resources, and support documentation for our community. Take a step back and realize that just because you are so familiar with your platform, materials, and information does not imply that your members will be, too. Did you have a lesson like this?
