I had the privilege of sharing the importance of breadth as embodied in the College of the Ozarks general education curriculum which prepares students to tackle a wide range of tasks at work and in life. Breadth is important for engineering graduates, half of whom are not in explicit engineering roles, as well as any graduate who wants to be prepared for the wonderfully diverse world we live in. https://lnkd.in/gWBcYERe

At Saint Louis Sudbury School, students are free to ask questions, learn from, and hang out with students and staff of all ages. Sudbury model school graduates often comment about how they are comfortable talking with their professors, supervisors, and co-workers of different ages. When have you worked with a team who were all the same age? This is a great behind the scenes moment of a younger student asking for help about possibly changing a school rule. He wanted to know about the wording of the current rule, how to make a motion in School Meeting to change it, and help writing the item on the School Meeting agenda. Educating our youth transcends curriculum coverage and programatic compliance. A student-centered educational system in 2023 should not have any similarities with an archaic, chairs-in-rows, factory-like school. In addition to structural, organizational, and fiscal issues; there are mindsets, assumptions, and prejudices that have made the educational system obsolete and in desperate need for transformation. Efforts like the one showcased here, although small in scale, are big in significance, as they attempt to change the minds, not only of the students, but also of the adults charged with educating the next generation of citizens.
