I remember the first time, years ago, that I heard “we need to empower and engage the frontline”. It struck me as odd. “But I know my colleagues”, I thought, “they ARE engaged outside of work, they are creative and joyful…outside of work, they are collaborative and passionate…outside of work.” ✨ Maybe it’s not an employee problem, maybe it’s a work environment one! ✨ ➡️ What if we didn’t have to “empower and engage the frontline” because we never stripped students of their power, curiosity, and autonomy in conventional school systems? Leaders would no longer need to “make it safe to ask questions” because we never learned that it was unsafe… Leaders would quit relying heavily on extrinsic motivation and carrot/stick approaches because we didn’t learn to chase a “gold star” over our own creative passions… Leaders would feel safe admitting they ‘don’t know’ because they never learned their worth was directly tied to school grades… What if? Yes, I work with CEOs to redefine business success by challenging their own preconceptions. But where do you think many of those preconceptions originated? *** Respect humanity (including children!). Sudbury model school graduates often comment about how they are comfortable talking with their professors, supervisors, and co-workers of different ages. Friends, we are in the home stretch of this campaign and I need your help to get to the finish line. This election has shown what we already know well: College Park is a special place. We love and are proud of College Park. So proud in fact, we claim it no matter who’s around. One of my colleagues in another Georgia city said recently, "Any mayor that doesn't believe their city is the best city in the world, shouldn't be mayor." I can't agree more. We are committed to this city. We know it’s not perfect, but we keep working everyday to make it even better. College Park deserves the best leadership - leaders who are genuinely dedicated to the well-being of the city, rather than those seeking power for personal gain and without doing the homework it takes to prepare for this role. If given the honor to serve as mayor for four more years, we will continue providing more access to quality housing and ensure our employees are compensated fully and fairly. We will work to provide our retirees yearly cost of living increases. We will invest in our youth through mentoring programs and even more pathways to great careers. Together, we will increase investments in safety and security. And I will maintain good government practices through transparency, communication, and expanded engagement opportunities. California's public school facilities need our support now more than ever. Equitable funding is crucial to ensure that every child, regardless of their zip code, has access to safe, modern, and effective learning environments. It's time to fundamentally change how school facilities are funded so that all students have access to the facilities they need and deserve to focus on their education. California students urgently need school facility funding from the state to modernize outdated and unsafe facilities. We must pass an education bond this year because there are billions of dollars in unmet needs. In moving forward with a much-needed education bond, however, it is crucial that our state legislature and the Newsom administration first fix the inequitable and unconstitutional system of school facility financing in California. Currently, low-wealth districts receive far less in state facility funding per student compared to their higher wealth counterparts ($7,000 vs. over $300,000)—even though they have greater modernization needs from compounded disinvestment from the state, and less ability to raise local funds. The result is an unequal and unconstitutional system in which students in low-wealth districts receive an education inferior to that of their peers in higher-wealth districts.
