Founder & CEO, Carla Raynes (pictured with DECJUBA Foundation's General Manager Gill Whelan), led the celebrations and shared her dream for the future: a Cocoon in every state in Australia. The Cocoon provides a home to those at risk of homelessness to recover, stabilise, develop living skills, and prepare for long-term housing. The original Cocoon, located in Melbourne, has seen every resident transition successfully into the private housing market thanks to wraparound support services, community, friendships, and genuine care. Our May First Friday Meeting is this FRIDAY May 3rd from 12:30pm-2:30pm! 🎉 The City of Muncie has been proactive in addressing housing and neighborhood blight through the formation of the Muncie Land Bank. There are also other organizations, both government (Public Housing Authority), and nonprofit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity that are working to ensure that housing is affordable to low - and moderate - income households. None of these agencies however ensure long term affordability for home owners. Community Land Trusts provide one means to ensure that housing for LMI remains affordable and sustainable over the long term. In this talk, Dr. Burayidi provides an account of the current state of housing in Muncie and how Community Land Trusts can help alleviate the housing affordability problem for low - and moderate - income households. We recently came across an inspiring video how Finland is providing efficient and sustainable housing solutions to those in need. The Indigenous Medicine Wheel teachings remind us that all aspects of our lives are interconnected. Having a place to call home is fundamental, as it supports physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Addressing homelessness with holistic solutions can lead to healthier, more balanced communities. Why can't we implement these solutions here in Canada? We have the land and the need and utilising modular construction allows us to build homes faster, more efficiently, and affordably.
