Supporting #OPENARM Initiatives: Alleviating the Deplorable Conditions of Impoverished Nigerians "No one has ever become poor by giving." - Anne Frank. Times are tough, the economic downturn has hit the poor especially hard, many people in #Nigeria are struggling to survive; in Nigeria, it has now become the 'survival of the fittest.' We currently find ourselves in a critical moment, where the severity of our circumstances is comparable to the rear end of a boat. The impoverished Nigerians are crying out for urgent assistance. It is disheartening to note that even those who may typically be unaware or unresponsive to societal issues are now keenly aware of the dire living conditions faced by the less fortunate in Nigeria. Regrettably, only a small number of individuals actively contribute to public or charitable causes or extend their thoughts towards those who are less fortunate than themselves. These are the reasons why our #OPENARM initiatives, an ideal of the PlungeSmile Foundation, stand like the rock of Gibraltar to rebuild homes by coming out to provide #food for the poor masses who could not afford the cost of living in Nigeria at the moment. Through our #OPENARM initiatives, for years we have been engaging with communities and we have been contributing in a positive way, #OPENARM initiatives have played a big part in our communities. On a daily basis, we are feeding over 500 #people in Obalende, Lagos Island, in #Lagos State. #OPENARM initiatives have transformed our communities into a beacon of hope by providing them foods such Asaro (Made from yam), jollof rice, amala and vegetable soup coupled with dry fish. We have been sharing breads for the masses, most especially during this Holy month of #Ramadan fasting, those who want paps (a soft food), #OPENARM initiatives has been providing it, through the efforts of the PlungeSmile Foundation. We have been building an egalitarian #society, we have been showing our humanity by helping those that need sincere help. Friends of Adaklu is a different kind of NGO. It is Ghanaian registered and is devoted to improving the lives of the people of the Adaklu Volta Region Ghana. Adaklu is enormously challenging because there is little potable water, scant electricity, and very poor soil conditions. FOA works with communities to assess their needs and help them achieve their goals - one project at a time. FOA is big on follow through and watches over the communities where it works, providing workshops, marketing help, research, information, etc. We regularly assess the impact and effectiveness of our projects to ensure that we catch problems while they are small and easily corrected. We move carefully and slowly using what we have learned to improve our efficacy from one community to the next. Of course, this takes money but since FOA is 100% volunteer run very penny raised goes to the people of Adaklu. FOA's focus is on education, food security, health care and economic development. We work with the villagers to foster self-reliance, and entrepreneurship through sustainable projects. FOA provides tools, skills, information, and organizational support, so the community can help itself break the poverty cycle. We work with communities to discover what the feel they need to get ahead and then we work with them providing the tools, information, education and resources they need to be successful. We work in partnership with international aid organizations to develop sustainable solutions that address the needs of the Adaklu communities. Our goal is to make the villages of Adaklu a model of what is possible when like-minded people put their heads together and tap into international resources. We can't wait to meet again with our great network of friends and supporters on the East Coast. All funds raised on the night will be invested in rural African entrepreneurs, the majority of them women, to help them increase profits from their small businesses and work their way out of poverty. Self Help Africa's mission is to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality and the impact of climate change through community-led, market-based and enterprise focused approaches to agricultural development, ensuring that people with have access to nutritious food, decent incomes and employment, clean water and basic services, all while sustaining natural resources. Their aim is to transition communities out of long-term poverty through work giveing them greater control over their futures and providing a better quality of life. The main focus of work is in sub-Saharan Africa, where global hunger and poverty is most acute, but we also work in Bangladesh and Brazil.
