#Seamounts support the health of the ocean – they are our #OceanLifelines. But these underwater mountains are under threat from bottom trawling. Seamounts are not only rich feeding grounds but also vital spawning areas for numerous fish species. Tuna, sharks, marine mammals, and seabirds all flock to seamounts. Will you stand up for seamounts protection? #ProtectSeamounts ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eNJmZNh8

The North Atlantic right whale is critically endangered with estimates of 360 individuals remaining. They have experienced an ongoing Unusual Mortality Event since 2017, which includes sublethally injured or ill, seriously injured, and dead right whales totaling 126 individuals who represent more than 20 percent of the population. Primary causes are entanglements in fishing gear and vessel strikes. According to NOAA, the best way you can help is by immediately reporting sightings of entangled whales to the local Large Whale Entanglement Response Network or the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF CH-16. Find out more about reporting a whale entanglement, including how to keep yourself safe when encountering one: https://lnkd.in/eK3G4bWg Reduce vessel strikes by traveling at 10 knots or less in Seasonal Management Areas along the U.S. East Coast at certain times of the year: https://lnkd.in/eT5MUcKZ #ConservationTuesday Photo credit: NOAA Fisheries. Very insightful article. It sounds like there may definitely be positive ecological and economic benefits to farming the urchins and allowing them to have a more nutritious diet in the aqua farms. It would also be helpful if there are forthcoming answers about what's causing the zombie phenomenon/phenotype in the wild. Clearly they are able to recover and fatten up when they are farm fed, but I don't think lack of access to adequate kelp in the wild is the only reason for the disease pathology.
An unprecedented crisis has been unfolding along the CA coast, including in Monterey Bay - a massive population of purple sea urchins blanketing huge swaths of near-shore ocean floor. These urchins eat giant kelp from the roots up, destroying the underwater forests which are essential habitat for fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals. This past weekend was #WorldOceanDay. Global Conservation is committed to direct action for our #oceans, #climate, and #communities. ⬇ Here is some #goodnews about our impact on oceans over the past 10 years through enhanced support of #MarineProtectedAreas. (MPA’s) Over the past ten years, we've: - Protected over 1,000 Species - 100s of Poacher Arrests, Fines, and Confiscations - Deployed 12 Marine Monitor (M2) Radar Surveillance Systems - Supported Over 7,000,000 hectares of #MarineProtectedAreas - Patrolled over 60,000 miles of Marine Protected Areas We want other organizations to see this success, so we recently published a new Marine Protection Handbook for MPA Managers authored by Dr. Lida Teneva, focusing on effective protection using marine radars and rapid response teams to combat illegal fishing and wildlife poaching. Shining a light on our Reef shell-ebrities this #WorldTurtleDay. Six of the world’s seven marine turtle species are found on the #GreatBarrierReef Unfortunately, three of these species are endangered and three are critically endangered. Two key threats facing our Reef’s turtles are feral animals and marine debris. Australia has stepped up our efforts to better manage these threats, including: • protecting turtle eggs and turtle hatchlings from feral animals through the Nest to Ocean Turtle Protection Program • supporting the ReefClean Program to stop marine debris, including plastics, from entering the Reef. The Nest to Ocean Turtle Protection Program is a joint initiative between the Australian Government and Queensland Government. ReefClean is run by Tangaroa Blue Foundation Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gN_euUbe

🦈 In honor of #SharkWeek, let’s talk about the alarming decline of their populations worldwide. Species like great white sharks, whale sharks, and scalloped hammerheads are among the many species threatened with extinction due to unsustainable fishing practices. That’s why we’re on the frontlines, fighting against threats like #bycatch, #shark finning, and #illegalfishing. Currently, our crew aboard the Allankay patrols Tuvalu’s waters in the #SouthPacific, working with the local authorities to stop illegal operations targeting tuna and potentially involving shark finning. ⚠️ Protecting these vital species and their habitats isn’t just crucial for them—it’s essential for the health of our oceans and all marine life. Without sharks, oceanic ecosystems face collapse. Join our fight to protect sharks by supporting our campaigns. Share or comment to help spread awareness and amplify our impact. Together, we can safeguard the future of sharks and our oceans. 🎥 Alice Bacou / Sea Shepherd #sharks #marineconservation #seashepherd
