The Sportfishing Capital of the World attracts more than 4.3 million anglers, who help make fishing in Florida an economic engine that contributes nearly $14 billion in economic output and supports more than 120,000 jobs. Looking after some of Britain’s most important bat roosts presents a few interesting challenges. In 2018, 800 greater horseshoe bats disappeared from one of VWT’s reserves in Devon when a pair of barn owls moved onto the site. Under licence from Natural England, the building entrances were modified to keep the barn owls out but allow the bats in. Happily, the bats returned. At VWT’s Rock Farm reserve, also in Devon and the largest known greater horseshoe bat maternity roost in Western Europe, annual bat counts usually show around 2,200 greater horseshoe bats, split between 1,400 in a large barn and 800 in a small barn. Last year, however, a pair of owls moved into the large barn and the bats all left. Some went into the small barn as the counts there suddenly doubled, others went into the surrounding caves, and some probably went to other sites. Thanks to the evidence of previous predator proofing being successful, the Bat Team was able to quickly apply for a licence and predator proof the roost spaces at Rock Farm during last winter. The modifications include: • Changing the size of the openings to prevent owls flying in • Preventing access through the lower sections of the grilles  • Covering timbers with anti-perch spikes to prevent perching  • Installing a tip-tray in an entrance, which tips and closes the entrance when a predator lands on it. • Covering slopes with smooth metal sheet to make it more difficult for predators to access. Our amazing volunteers carried out regular counts and monitored the bat behaviour caused by the owl presence and will continue to monitor this year, to check the interventions have worked and the bats have returned to their favourite roost spots. If we add these “events” to the tally of reported bycatch since September, the total is now 16 deaths in fishing nets for Hector’s - 14 of which occured off the coast of Canterbury. If we allow this kind of destruction to continue, we really could be saying a big “goodbye Freddie” to our dolphin friends, for real.
