It seems like there is a day for everything, and today happens to be #WorldBloodDonorDay. Warning: incoming potential personal overshare, but there are often very blurred or indistinct boundaries between professional and personal values. I have been donating #blood for a few years. It turns out that I have a rare Ro blood type - only 2% of current UK donors have this, and yet apparently demand for is increasing by 10-15% per year. There is a widening demand for donations for this blood type. According to the UK Blood Service: "Ro blood is vital in treating sickle cell; approximately 245 babies a year are born in the UK with this condition. Treatment is often with regular blood transfusions. Each year, a regularly transfused patient with sickle cell will need an average of 100 blood donors to stay alive." Likely I will never know or meet the recipient of my blood donation. I am totally ok with that. Actually I think that makes the service of donating even more amazing: knowing that a small act of sitting in a chair for a few minutes will have given a stranger, and their family hope and opportunity. The reality: There’s a good chance we, or someone close to us, will need blood transfusion in our lifetimes. I don’t enjoy giving blood. But making it available to someone in serious need makes it easier to push through. My tricks: bring headphones, read something that requires a lot of focus, or watch funny videos. What’s your trick? The data: “In patients over the age of 64, transfusion of blood and blood products ranks as the second most common procedure performed in U.S. hospitals. “For patients between the ages of 45-64, it is the fifth most common procedure. “Overall, transfusion of blood and blood products occurs in 3.5-5.1 percent of hospital stays, depending on patient age group.” (2022 America’s Blood Centers) The ask: Consider doing some research to become comfortable with how your donation will be collected and utilized, and pick a donation agency that you feel you can support. Blood donation is a selfless act that often goes unnoticed but is incredibly important. 🩸 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 1. The first successful blood transfusion was performed in 1818 by James Blundell. 2. According to the WHO, “Of the 118.5 million blood donations collected globally, 40% are collected in high-income countries, which are home to only 16% of the world’s population.” 3. The Red Cross states, “Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets.” 4. Blood cannot be manufactured; it must come from voluntary donors. 5. Type O negative blood is the universal donor and is the most requested blood type by hospitals. Remember, 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. According to a recent article, regularly donating blood may improve heart health. That’s because donating reduces the thickness of your blood, allowing it to flow more easily through your body and reach your heart faster. Another study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that people who donated blood had an 88% lower risk of suffering a heart attack. 3. A study by the University of San Diego found that donating one pint of blood “burns” between 600 and 650 calories. How? Calories are burned when the body expends energy to replace the removed red blood cells. 4. You get a mini-physical. The screening involves checking your blood pressure, pulse, and hemoglobin levels. Your blood will be tested for sickle cell trait and other infectious diseases, and you will receive a private letter with the results. You will also be given your blood type. 🩸 January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to celebrate the selfless individuals who so generously provide the lifesaving gift of blood donation. This year’s theme of “Celebrating Diversity, Inclusivity and Equity in Blood Donation" emphasizes the importance of having blood donors from diverse backgrounds. Diversity in the blood supply helps ensure that people with rare blood types have compatible blood available to them when they need it. Blood donations play a vital role in the treatment of chronic conditions. For example, people with sickle cell disease – most of whom are of African descent – often rely upon frequent blood transfusions to prevent life-threatening complications and manage extreme pain. Donors in the Black community are almost three times more likely to be a match for people with sickle cell disease.
