🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🏠 While significant strides have been made to support those who identify as LGBTQ+, youth are still disproportionately unhoused compared to their heterosexual, cisgender peers. In addition to increased housing insecurity of LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ adults may face housing discrimination, such as being charged higher rents, being shown fewer units, and getting harassed when trying to seek supportive services. Intersecting identities, such as race and sex, create even greater gaps in housing discrimination. 📌 Public housing authorities (PHAs) have an obligation to promote fair housing and can make a difference in the lives of their residents. By centering equity, PHAs may improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. June is PRIDE month, and protecting LGBTQ+ youth from the risks involved with substance-use disorder (SUD) and addiction is paramount. According to SAHMSA, about one third of bisexual males, bisexual females, and gay males had an SUD in the past year. About one fourth of lesbian females had an SUD in the past year. These are just a few proven steps you can take to help prevent substance-use disorder in LGBTQ+ youth, whether you are an educator, service-provider, or just a friend.
