🧠 Struggling with our mental health makes it difficult to reach out to our communities for help. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to spotlight the research of Associate Member Vatsal Khandelwal who's paper 'Silent Networks: The Role of Inaccurate Beliefs in Reducing Useful Social Interactions' investigates how misperceptions about social norms influence access to vital support networks. The paper highlights the critical importance of dispelling misconceptions regarding the community's readiness to offer assistance among low-income urban workers in India. It demonstrates how rectifying these misconceptions can increase the willingness to seek aid for both financial and mental health challenges. Clinging to these misconceptions creates 'silent networks,' wherein individuals' needs go unaddressed, undermining effective support systems. As we approach the end of 2023, it's important to recognize the challenging fact that 10.6% of India's population deals with mental health issues, while a significant 76-85% lack the necessary support. This gap in mental health care is driven by a shortage of trained professionals, a focus on urban services, insufficient community support, stigma, discrimination, and inadequate budget allocations. As mental health professionals, let's advocate for more resources, extend services, combat stigma through education, and collaborate to ensure inclusive and supportive mental health care. 🤝 Wishing you an early Happy New Year filled with mental well-being and success! 💪💙 #mentalhealthawareness #newyearwishes #bridgethegap #treatmentgap #mentalhealthcrisis #mentalhealthstatistics #newyearwellness #mentalhealthadvocacy #mentalhealthawareness #mind #wmha

Mental health issues are prevalent among women, often exacerbated by societal expectations and cultural norms. They explore how these factors contribute to the reluctance of women to seek help, leading to a cycle of silence and suffering. The conversation delves into the specific challenges faced by women from diverse backgrounds, including immigrant communities and those from marginalized groups. To prevent suicide in autistic people, we need to understand it better. That's why we've partnered with researchers to identify patterns in health data. This research will help us improve our understanding of the contributing factors to suicide, identify gaps in services, and find opportunities to support autistic people struggling with their mental health sooner. The findings from this project will contribute to our 2030 Goals of providing support from day one and ensuring an annual tailored health check for autistic people. Mental health issues among men are a significant concern worldwide, with statistics indicating a substantial impact on male populations. According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 45 in many countries. Additionally, research suggests that men are less likely than women to seek help for mental health issues, leading to higher rates of undiagnosed and untreated conditions. Factors such as societal expectations of masculinity, stigma surrounding mental health, and limited access to healthcare services contribute to these concerning statistics. It is crucial for healthcare providers and policymakers to address these disparities by promoting mental health awareness and providing tailored interventions and support services for men in need. Efforts must be made globally to break down barriers preventing men from seeking help and ensure they receive the assistance they require to improve their mental well-being. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthrecovery #endthestigma #mindfulness #personalgrowth #daringgreatly #selfcarematters #anxietyawareness #emotionalwellbeing #mentalhealthadvocate #itsokaytonotbeokay

I am pleased by the #KingsSpeech last week. 📢 The government has committed to reforming the outdated Mental Health Act. -The current system was created in 1983, but the world has changed drastically in 40 years. -Urgent modernisation is essential and I hope the reforms are comprehensive and effective. 📢 Mental health to be given same attention and focus as physical health -For too long, mental health has been brushed under the carpet -I hope that this is a key step in reducing the stigma around mental health. #politics #mentalhealth #mentalhealthcampaigning

Did you know that South Africa reports the tenth highest rate of suicide globally, with 23.5 suicides per 100,000 people, and men make up nearly 80% of these cases? Traditional masculine norms in the region often keep men from seeking the mental health care they need, impacting their health and longevity. However, grassroots, community-led initiatives are making strides in changing this narrative, helping men to open up and receive support. Discover how communities are reshaping mental health for men. Professor Dame Sue Bailey: Tackling mental health inequalities 🎙 We recently spoke to Prof Dame Sue Bailey OBE DBE FRCPsych about health inequalities and social determinants of health. As big believers in mental health support for all, it’s critical that we understand these issues while finding every way possible to raise awareness of our service so that no-one is alone and struggling with their mental health. To illustrate the issue, Sue, who travels to work by tram, told us that her life expectancy is four years more than a woman of her age living at the other end of the tram line. The fact is that there are systematic, unfair, and avoidable differences in health across the population, but also between different groups within society. In this video, Sue describes how some communities are often poorly heard, the importance of early support and the tough task of commissioners in helping lift people out of health inequality.
