#ThrowbackThursday Today, we gleefully look back at a visit from USC’s Homeless Outreach Partnership for Education and Empowerment (HOPE2)! Some of the medical students of the club joined us last February to provide our guests with medical foot washing, a chance to check for any foot-based ailments, and a free pair of socks. Smiles and laughter can be seen being shared as our guests and student volunteers got a very different opportunity to connect. Having special event days like this helps remind our guests of the countless groups and organizations that are working to provide them with care-first services and aid. We cannot thank enough our partners and incredible student volunteers from USC and their HOPE2 program! #ThrowbackThursday #GoTrojans #DepaulUSA #CasaMilagrosa #DepaulUSALA #DaughtersOfCharity #Charity1633 #HomelessnessHasNoPlace

Why don’t we care about children in care? One of the most shocking examples of privatising public services in the rise and rise of illegal private care homes for children. Yes “illegal”. Some of the most vulnerable children and young people, often traumatised, abused and neglected continue to be traumatised , abused and neglected in for-profit settings. We don’t know the full picture, because Ofsted is hamstrung. In 2010 Michael Gove rebranded the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) the Department for Education (DfE) and immediately dis-integrated children’s services. We should be ashamed!

As I engage with practitioners transitioning children from Charitable Institutions to family and community-based care, I've identified a common gap in understanding key benchmarks for successful reintegration. Today, I’d like to highlight these essential benchmarks across critical areas: Health & Development: Ensure children are well-nourished, meeting developmental milestones, and have consistent access to healthcare services. Education: All children should be enrolled in education, attending regularly, progressing academically, and supported in inclusive learning environments. Protection & Safety: Create safe, abuse-free homes and communities with effective reporting systems, and provide training on child safety. Psychosocial Wellbeing: Build children's self-esteem and resilience through supportive activities, ensuring access to social services that respect cultural values. Relationship & Attachment: Promote quality caregiver-child interactions, ensuring consistency in care to foster emotional security. Economic Stability: Support families in accessing sustainable income opportunities and financial education for long-term stability. Understanding these benchmarks is key to successful child reintegration, helping to build a strong foundation for thriving within their families and communities. #ChildWelfareprograms #Reintegration #FamilyCare #Communitymodels WezaCare Solutions

According to a new AARP Report, it finds family caregivers provide $600 billion in unpaid care across the US. "Care provided by millions of unpaid family caregivers across the US was valued at $600 billion in 2021, the new report estimates, a $130 billion increase in unpaid contributions from 2019. The staggering figure is based on about 38 million caregivers providing an average of 18 hours of care, at an average value of $16.59 per hour (AARP.org). ✨ Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system. ✨ Roughly 60 percent of family caregivers work either full-time or part-time jobs and 30 percent live with a child or a grandchild. They need and deserve more assistance. 💡 Patient Advocates are now becoming more in demand due to these rising numbers. 💡 Caregivers need support. As inequalities for care leavers differ by region, putting local organisations at the heart of funding will help to explore local solutions to local issues, and use their experiences to influence more support for care leavers.
A new programme that launched that will see £3.6 million handed to care leavers initiatives across England. The money is being distributed by 17 charity-run community foundations which will co-ordinate grants and investments locally, working with their regions local authority. The project will support projects that tackle homelessness, unemployment, and the lack of long-term support for those leaving care. New figures show that 450 children were in care in Northumberland last year, and over 26% of them were moved more than 20 miles from home. Sadly, this experience is shared by 20% of looked after children across England. There's no denying that for some children, it's right to be moved away for their safety, but sadly, more and more children are moved away simply because of a long-documented lack of suitable care placements. Become is calling on the government and local authorities to: ⛔ Commit to stop children being placed miles from home 📈 Publish strategies to increase the supply of appropriate local options 📁 Recognise and register the number of times children are moved inappropriately. If you want to help to drive change, Become recommend contacting your MP and asking them to support the #GoneTooFar Campaign. Find out more from Become's website: https://lnkd.in/eMqjbhSC
