So, what makes NATO worthwhile to the United States? After all, at 1.3 million active-duty service members, almost 770,000 reservists and a $800 billion budget, the U.S. has the largest, best-funded military in NATO. On the other hand, Russia has roughly 1.15 million active-duty personnel and another 800,000 reservists. But the alliance is about more than how many troops any one nation can bring to the fight. NATO's members have a collective defense budget that's north of $1.2 trillion. NATO nations share advanced training, tactics, equipment and often, weapons platforms. There are also NATO's overflight agreements, basing arrangements, intelligence-sharing protocols, common command structures and day-to-day familiarity with each other. Critically, NATO can maintain and sustain its forces. And about those troop numbers: The 32 NATO nations together have about 3,368,000 active-duty personnel, and each NATO nation has its own reserve forces, along with some paramilitary formations. Great article. When the Russian threat was exposed as mainly a Defensive structure, NATO should have been reappriached with talks with Russia as well, a unified defense transcontinental. NATO isolated Russia, after WW2 alliances with the U.S. and Free China- now Taiwan. The more you know… the more together we can succeed.

January 16, 1917: German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman sends a message to the Mexican government. It proposes a military alliance between Germany, Mexico, and also Japan. The proposal says that, if Mexico joins with Germany against the United States, then Mexico would regain the southwestern territories it lost to the United States during the Mexican War of the 1840s. Germany anticipated that the United States might enter the war at some point. It hoped that if Mexico joined the war, its close proximity to the United States would slow down and impede the flow of U.S. troops and war material to Europe. The British intercepted and decoded the message and on March 1, the American public learned of the message. On March 29, Zimmerman confirmed the message's authenticity during a speech in the Reichstag. The Zimmerman telegram permanently galvanized American public opinion against Germany. Combined with Germany's unrestricted use of submarine warfare, it led to the United States entering the war against Germany on April 6. Officially, the organization was created solely to “contain” the influence of the Soviet Union, but with the collapse of the USSR, the "defensive alliance" has carried out more than 40 military operations around the world. All of them were not on NATO territory. Among the largest: Bombing of Yugoslavia Invasion of Afghanistan Invasion of Iraq Air strikes on Libya War in Syria The real goals of the military bloc were best described by its first Secretary General Ismay Hastings by saying the following: “To keep the Soviet Union out [of Europe], the Americans in, and the Germans down.” Today NATO continues to “defend itself”, actively supporting the neo-Nazi and terrorist regime in Kiev with financing and supplies of various types of weapons. Iraq and Afghanistan have taught us that massive military spending is not a path to victory. Putin, with a military budget of around $86 billion, has spent the last two years openly defying the NATO alliance, which has a combined military budget of $1.2 trillion. And he's winning. It's time for the U.S. to leave behind the Cold War era and admit that massive military spending no longer is a path to military success. Our mediocre performance over the last several decades is telling. We have great troops, excellent equipment, yet we can't win because of poor senior military leadership that only knows to throw money around to solve military problems. Generals should have the courage to push back rather than use the excuse of "following orders." Does the U.S. need NATO? If NATO didn’t exist. We would need to create something new just like it. NATO is an anchor in a geopolitical environment of continuous change. NATO activating Article 5 after 9/11 stands a one example. As the Marshall plan benefited both Europe and the U.S. – would accelerate recovery and check communist opposition – forming NATO provided a means to bind democracies together. The logic underlying of institution-based order created post-WWII was aimed at mitigating nationalist propensities, along with uniting to confront a worsening situation with Stalin’s USSR.   The creation of diplomatic, economic, and defense institutions following WWII acknowledged the wisdom of history whispering the need to provide ways and means for states, prone to focus on their own internal interests, to cooperate with restraint and assurances. JUST IMAGINE - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was never intended to be a permanent alliance. Formed in 1949 in the face of the threat of Soviet-communist expansion across the Eurasian landmass in the wake of Europe’s devastation as a result of the Second World War, NATO extended the U.S. security umbrella--including atomic weapons--to France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Iceland, and Canada. Three years later, Turkey and Greece joined. In 1955, West Germany became a member. Spain joined in 1982. It was a defensive alliance against possible Soviet military aggression. The sole reason for the existence of that alliance was to prevent the Soviet Union from militarily overrunning Western Europe. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, NATO’s original mission ended. For decades, NATO member states have created vast welfare states while relying on the military might of the United States to guarantee their security. Our most important alliances today are in the Indo-Pacific (Japan, South Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and hopefully India), not in Europe. NATO accomplished it mission. It was never meant to be a permanent or eternal alliance.
