Incoming CEO Paul Sweetman took part in AmCham’s annual ‘US-Business in Ireland’ special Report which was published on Friday in the Irish Examiner. His article focused on Ireland’s special relationship with the United States. “Ireland is an incredibly attractive location for investment, and there are a number of key reasons for this — including being nimble, flexible and effective in responding to global challenges. How we respond to challenges is a real hallmark of our ‘can do’ attitude and approach, which is very reassuring for those who are investing here and encourages further growth and investment.” He continued “The figures continue to increase year on year, and I do believe that many of the competitive advantages we have remain remarkably compelling for US companies looking to invest here. It is really important to remember just how rigorously US investors examine multiple locations in advance of their investment decisions, a process that includes looking at key metrics such as the R&D environment, economic stability, access to markets and quality of life. We perform well in each of those areas, and the fact that we are so competitive in those spaces is why we win investment.” He also pointed out that this is a two-way relationship “I think the most compelling stat is that Ireland is the 9th largest FDI investor in the US — a fact that many people don’t realise. That really shows the mutually beneficial economic relationship on both sides of the Atlantic.” However he highlighted the importance of Ireland not being complacent “Competition will get tougher from other jurisdictions, so we must constantly match what companies need and stay ahead of the curve. Irish businesses are thriving in the US, and it’s not just by chance - it’s about strategy and resilience. From the economic crisis to a $70 billion budget to a surplus forecasted for 2027, Ireland has shown a remarkable turnaround thanks to its pro-business environment and global outlook. Despite bumps like inflation, Irish businesses are staying focused and aligned with the US. In an interview with CNN Business Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland said it’s about embracing global markets from the get-go. With a small domestic market, Irish businesses naturally pivot towards international expansion, particularly in the US, where they’ve become job creators and industry leaders. Interesting thoughts were shared, as always, last night with the Civitas Network. Focusing on the theme: Unlocking Global Potential. This definitely got some new ideas moving about. Here are some key takeaways: ➡️ Don't try and prove your business in a new territory. Make sure you're established and strong in your current region before expanding it across shores. ➡️ Your competitors could be your biggest clients 💡 (think outsource/white label... if that makes sense for you). ➡️ Don't rush to open an offshore account. If the money still needs to end up back here you might need to weigh up your stable market exposure vs unecessary admin and expense. ➡️ Be clear about your intention to scale in a new country. If you are trying to find the most tax efficient territory, for example, make sure you understand why that is your goal and if that territory still makes sense for other objectives. ➡️ Make sure you have a solid advisory team to help you do things the right way.
