🌟 Did you know? 🌟
Only 23% of designers in the UK identify as female, a figure that has increased by just 1% since 2015.
Faye Toogood’s article in the Financial Times, highlights the importance of building pathways for women and marginalised communities to lead and thrive in design. It’s time to break barriers and reimagine the #DesignEconomy.

Public spaces are designed for men by default. How practically, specifically, can we design them so they work better for women? (And for everyone.)
In this 2-minute explainer Kim Clarys summarises her recent more in-depth blog post on the same subject.

Thanks to Rina Shin for being a part of this year’s IDSA Women in Design, and for sharing an infographic that highlights what many women in the field have been feeling.
I know there are better writers and minds out there who are studying, advocating, and in the trenches of this community. But as part of the dipping demographic, I will say here that progress jumpstarted in the ‘Lean In Days’ - really saw a stress test during the Pandemic (and failed).
IYKYK and the data shows. Women 30-44 (read into it)! …Great we’ve built a more equitable talent pool; but the continued miss is the failure to convert that into Senior+ level designers and managers. Women are getting passed over. In my career, I found success when I had female mentor/managers who passionately (aggressively) advocated with and for me. The numbers weren’t good back then, but they’re looking even worse now.
20 years ago in my first corporate design team, I was the only ‘girl’ awkwardly watching a bunch of bros slapping each other’s backs. Today on my LinkedIn, the feed is still full of men congratulating other men. I’m not the only one who’s felt a lack of sustained progress. When young women ask me- yes, I encourage community building (which means including other disciplines because we need the numbers and we have the same problems) but more so, I ask for women to advocate for each other in the workplace. Noting, as we move through our careers the more aggressive that space making can and should be. I think Daenerys had a sane thought at the start - in our institutional structures, you need to get to the top to break the wheel.
Please take a moment to look at these stats on Women in Industrial Design...
It's incredibly important to recognize that ID is a field almost as male dominated as engineering is and it's even more important to learn about the steps we can take to make the filed more equitable
Top 3 facts that stood out to me:
1. 51% of ID grads are women, but women only make up 28% of Industrial Designers
2. The percentage of women in ID has decreased from 30.77% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2021
3. If women participated in the economy identically to men we'd see an extra 28 trillion dollars added to the annual GDP
If you think it's important for other people to see these stats, repost them.

If you design systems / services / products / solutions, how do you make sure that what you create will also work for women? It turns out that traditional design approaches often create solutions that forget about women. This framework, developed by Mansi Gupta, is a simple and powerful way to make sure that when we design, we also design for women. #inclusivedesign#impact#esg#inclusion#design#humancentereddesign#hcd#belonging#sdg

How might we actively and intentionally co-create a future that serves women?
After a decade of leading design projects in gender and social impact, I noticed that my own toolkit & methods were failing to meet women's basic needs. I founded Unconform to change that. Today, it is a dream come true to share #WomenCentricDesign with you all — an open-source toolkit that supports design and impact practitioners to build products, services and systems that center & serve women.

This project could not have been possible without the incredible generosity, support and encouragement from the 80+ project contributors who shaped this project with me – thank you.
Special thanks to Jona Repishti, Marwa Muhammad, Victor Udoewa, Fabian Pfortmüller, Danielle Barnes, Jessica Espinoza, Clôd Priscilla Baumgartner for their continued encouragement and moral support. To Alfredo Carlo, Giulia Ferrari and the team at Housatonic for their incredible work and patience supporting our design process. And to the European Commission for co-funding this project.

I've been following Mansi Gupta's work for over a year now and I'm always inspired by the insights she shares in her Unconform Newsletter. Now, she's just launched this toolkit designed to assist practitioners in creating products and processes that center women. I can't wait to start using it!
In our daily work, it's common to design products with a focus on "generic" users, and doing so, we can easily overlook the needs of women (half the population!). Therefore, I highly recommend anyone involved in product development to take a look at Mansi's toolkit.
(By the way, if you are interested in learning more about these perspectives, Caroline Criado Perez's book titled "Invisible Women" is also a great way to start 🙌)

Check out this wonderful toolkit and framework by Mansi Gupta:

It will help you to help you create products that are not longer driving gender inequalities. And yes, we need this. Because unfortunately still we forget about women a lot…
❌ In tech: voice recognition technologies are known to reinforce harmful gender biases.
❌ In healthcare: heart attacks are known to go misdiagnosed in women because their unique symptoms are not recognized.
❌ In finance: gender pension gaps exist because they don’t take into account how women’s lives are different.
So check out this wonderful framework, which was just released today:

It's been nice to see Mansi develop this and play a small part in. Anyone doing intentional design should think through their approach in relation to gender and thinking beyond labels. What is it that we're actually doing vs what is it that we're saying? People always focus more on what is said than what is done. While both are important, it's easier to say something is gender-sensitive than making it gender-sensitive.

Mansi Gupta at Unconform released an open-source toolkit today that supports design and impact practitioners to build products, services and systems that center & serve women. This is backed by years of research and 80+ contributors.
I am grateful to have collaborated with Mansi to make the framework actionable in my field of product management. If you are noticing biases in your product, reach out to me or Mansi on how we can help make sure your product serves women.
