Black and African American people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) face disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, potentially leading to decreased access to care, resources, and research opportunities. It is crucial to recognize their unique needs and experiences so that scientists can better understand how PD impacts diverse communities. The Parkinson’s Foundation aims to identify these healthcare disparities to better serve and support the community. In this second episode of our Black History Month special, Dr. Reversa Joseph, Neurologist, MDS at the Columbus Ohio VA, and Dr. Hiral G. Shah, Neurologist, MDS at Columbia University Medical Center, discuss current and historical disparities in research and treatment among the Black and African American PD community. They emphasize the importance of raising awareness about PD in this community, as well as in the medical space, to better understand the diverse lived experiences of the Black PD community. I often speak fondly of my Grandmama's quilts. The quilts are much more than scraps of fabric, thread, and batting. The quilts are lessons for our work to end the epidemic. We are Quilters, creating a beautiful patchwork quilt. A patchwork to erase stigma, create equitable systems, and embody social & healing justice. There are quilts that haven't been started some that have been started but haven't yet been finished. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the summer of 1915 when Carter G. Woodson encouraged thousands of African Americans to celebrate the progress their people had made since the destruction of slavery. The first official month-long celebration of Black History Month occurred more than 60 years later, in 1976 in the United States.   The AST is vastly aware of the disparities faced by the Black community within donation and transplantation. Overall, Black patients make up 28% of the waiting list for all organs but account for just about 16% of deceased donors. Increasing donor diversity also helps improve the odds of finding a good match. Inaction or silence in the face of these injustices serves only to perpetuate racism, extend the public health crisis, and contradict our mission to better the lives of vulnerable populations.   In addition to the disparities amongst our patient population, only 5.5% of transplant surgeons and less than 7% of kidney specialists are Black. The AST strives to develop a diverse workforce of transplant professionals that reflects the patient population we serve. Improving the diversity of transplant professionals and scientists to better serve the needs of the diverse patient population.   Carter G Woodson said: “Education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better.” Our goal at AST has always been to continue to make life better, for all.  

Today was an engaging time of presenting my topic on Intergenerational Trauma from a Black Perspective. The discussion was on discovering how historical events continue to impact the Black community and exploring ways to heal and empower ourselves. The conversation engaged in thought-provoking conversations, connection with like-minded individuals, and gaining a deeper understanding of the lasting effects of trauma. Together for Arizona wants to congratulate one of our esteemed collaborators, Carlian Dawson for publishing her book, Black Trauma: What Happens to Us! In her new book, Dr. Dawson and Da'Mond Holt explore the unique aspects of black trauma that is shaped and rooted in a complex history of institutional, systemic, and structural racism, unequal access to resources, social injustices, and economic disparities. Black trauma is often highlighted due to the historical and systemic oppression faced by Blacks/African Americans, including enslavement, segregation, and ongoing racial discrimination. While other communities may experience trauma, the distinct nature of Black trauma arises from the historical and ongoing challenges specific to the Black/African American experience in the United States. Understanding these social determinants of health is crucial for addressing the complexities of Black/African American trauma and working towards equitable solutions.
