For the last 125 years, students have attended Casarez, formerly known as Sheridan Elementary, suffering sweltering temperatures with no air-conditioning. But when students return Aug. 26, they’ll enter cooled classrooms, thanks to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who pledged $200,000 this spring for the cooling projects at Casarez and nine other schools — Clara Barton, Castor Gardens Middle School, D. Newlin Fell, Thomas Finletter, Fitler Academics Plus, Benjamin Franklin/Science Leadership Academy, Edward Gideon, A.S. Jenks, and Theodore Roosevelt. Seven of the 10 schools had 199 air conditioners installed this summer; the projects at Castor Gardens and Roosevelt are expected to be completed by September. One project is still in the planning stages. Systemwide inequities in AC, still Systemwide, the Philadelphia School District still has 63 schools that lack adequate air-conditioning. Elevate Collegiate Charter School in Houston, TX needed additional classrooms to house its enrollment. The obvious answer was to install portable classrooms on the large yard. The less obvious solution was to build a mezzanine in what was formerly attic space by building a structure within a structure. The 2nd challenge was providing accessibility to said mezzanine. The obvious solution was to install an elevator. The less obvious was to build a lift. Here are both creative solutions in place saving time, money, and without compromise. Together, we identified the opportunity to repurpose previously unused attic space into a functional mezzanine, effectively optimizing available resources and space. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, we sought a solution that would ensure inclusivity for all students. The decision to implement a lift, rather than a traditional elevator, underscored our joint focus on efficiency and practicality. This project underscores our collective dedication to educational excellence and equitable access. As I take notice of the highs, the lows, and the 'in-betweens' of HALO over 2023, I recognize a theme of resilience, and that's good. We have noticed that everyone and all organizations experience distress, grief, or anxiety, yet the ones that stand out are those who cope in ways that foster growth. (Shout out to Catholic school teachers who model resilience to their students and help them to make it one of the many advantages Catholic education can provide for their lifetime.) At HALO we believe that being open to change creates new perspectives and that allows us to reach for more possibilities.
