As a kid that grew up on ESPN, I can't believe it is at a point where it is struggling to find a future. Matt Van Dalsem turned me onto this podcast by The Ringer on the topic of what Disney should do with ESPN. I have to say, over the past few years, it's become disheartening to see ESPN struggling to find content that aligns with their brand. In recent months, we've witnessed some rather peculiar choices, such as the "slippery stairs world championships" and the "pillow fighting world championships" being featured on ESPN stations. 🤔 While these events may have their own fan base, it raises the question of whether ESPN is diluting its brand and losing touch with its core audience. That combined with the changes in the media space as a whole, is making this a defining point in the future of ESPN. I think that ESPN is going to have to evolve with the times and find a way to be relevant to the core drivers of human emotions. It has to find it's new voice and define the new value that it is going to bring to this new generation of viewers. What got it here (being the place we went each day to watch highlights from the previous day) has been surpassed by other media options. Sports broadcast rights have become more and more competitive with brands such as Amazon coming in to the market to compete for the National Football League (NFL). The leagues have started their own channels, the MLB Network, NFL Network, SEC Network, etc. I don't know the answer for ESPN, but I do know that there can be a future for this legacy asset, with a renewed focus. As Gretzky said, ESPN should be "skating to where the puck is going, not where it has been". According to Fortune, the prediction is that considering inflation and ESPN's current value, Apple should buy ESPN 🔥  and should offer $50-$60B for the network. If we go to a regular inflation calculator, Disney paid $38 billion for the company. If they were offered $50 billion, they would still make a massive profit from it. Currently, Disney is not going through a great moment with the writers and actors' strike. They could definitely use much of that money to reach a settlement and get that massive weight off their shoulders. If Apple made an offer, should The Walt Disney Company consider it?

Disney's ESPN network is going direct-to-consumer, and CEO Bob Iger confirmed that it's "not a matter of if, but when." The company is exploring potential strategic partners to achieve this goal. Earlier this week, Disney and ESPN signed a 10-year licensing deal with casino company Penn Entertainment, which will use ESPN branding to launch its online sports betting brand, ESPN Bet. In exchange for using ESPN's name, marketing, and talent, Penn will pay $1.5 billion and provide ESPN with the option to buy Penn stock. Iger Shows Leg “The Walt Disney Company released separate results for their sports division as management seeks a strategic partner for the business. Profit at Walt Disney Co.’s sports TV networks fell 20% through the first nine months of fiscal 2023, as the company provided the first peek at that business on a standalone basis. Earnings at the sports-media unit, which includes the flagship ESPN network and related channels, fell to $1.48 billion in the nine months ended July 1, Disney said in a filing Wednesday. Sales declined 1.3% to $13.2 billion. The numbers indicate a still very profitable operation, even amid growing challenges of a weaker TV market. The sports unit generated operating income of $2.71 billion on sales of $17.3 billion in the previous fiscal year, the company said.” https://lnkd.in/e-fdbAfu Am I the only one who finds this all really sad? Iger is like a patriarch in the dark ages trying to marry off his child by showing what nice child bearing hips they have. There’s a tremendous business in that sports division - and not only from the declining yet still massive revenues from their legacy PayTV subs and ads. The unit produced nearly a billion IN PROFIT in 3Q. An organization built for the new User-Centric Era, with leadership attuned to how adapt to Big Tech dominance should be able to transform the company - and specifically IP as addictive and engaging as sports - into what it needs to be. But this lawn sale does the business no favors, and smacks of desperation. Makes me wish I had access to some billions so I could low-ball Bob and grab what is very likely to be a bargain. Just me?

I absolutely love the work Nathan Shingleton and I created last year for the Young Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The brief was to create a print ad to entice a young audience with careers in advertising. Our insight came from seeing large percentages of Gen-Z and Millennials aren’t sure what they want as a career, but know they want to make a difference and have a positive impact. By leaving the page almost completely empty we encourage our audience to take a moment and actually imagine a career in advertising. This idea could also translate to other formats, such as Social, TV, or OOH, as the abundance of blank space naturally captures attention and sparks the imagination. #advertising #marketing #creativity #print #Cannes

Now it's getting interesting. Apple buying ESPN from The Walt Disney Company would change the landscape of the front runners for streaming subscribers instantly. And personally I think a smart move for Apple. They have the $$. Disney is shoring up it's books. Question is whether Disney/ESPN would sell just a portion or all.
