For the purpose of law enforcement, the most constrained aspect is the correct identification when they are presented as tree logs and mixed with or declared as non-CITES listed look alike species.
#WildlifeTradeTuesdays | African #rosewood (specifically, Pterocarpus erinaceus) faces multiple threats, including uncontrolled and illegal harvesting for high value #timber. 🪵🌳 Because P. erinaceus is listed in CITES Appendix II, international trade in the species is closely controlled to ensure that such trade is not detrimental to its survival in the wild. The illegal trade in pangolin scales poses a severe threat to pangolin populations worldwide. Here are some additional points to consider: 1. Ecological Importance : Pangolins play a crucial role in ecosystems by controlling insect populations, including ants and termites. Their decline could lead to imbalances in ecosystems, impacting agriculture and other industries dependent on insect control. 2. Cultural Significance: Pangolins hold cultural significance in some communities where their scales are believed to have medicinal properties or are considered a delicacy. Addressing the demand for pangolin scales requires not only legal measures but also awareness campaigns to change cultural perceptions and reduce demand. 3. International Cooperation:Since pangolins are trafficked across borders, international cooperation is vital in combating the illegal trade. Countries must work together to share intelligence, strengthen enforcement efforts, and harmonize laws and regulations related to wildlife trafficking. Join the movement to protect pangolins! 🌿 Raise awareness and take action #PangolinConservation #StopPangolinTrafficking #SavePangolins #WildlifeProtection #IllegalWildlifeTrade #EcologicalBalance #CulturalHeritage #InternationalCooperation #WildlifeCrimePrevention #SustainableEcology Together, we can make a difference! 💪

In 2022, only 19 steelhead came back to spawn in the Chilcotin River in B.C.’s southern interior, compared to more than 3000 reported in 1985. Steelhead could be the canary in the coal mine for the health of freshwater habitats – and Pacific salmon too. Declining steelhead abundance in B.C. has been linked to low survival rates in the ocean, harvests in commercial fisheries, and degradation of freshwater habitats due to logging, water extraction, and other human activities. Monitoring is critical to better understand, manage, and address steelhead conservation risks. Right now, only 4% of the estimated 429 steelhead populations in B.C. have abundance data available from the past decade. Read below to learn more about the state of steelhead.

Senegalese fisheries association warns against re-flagging of vessels of Asian origin and promote #SFPA with EU. As the new government published their fisheries programe, the Association for the promotion and empowerment of small-scale maritime fishing stakeholders (Aprapam Peche Artisanale ): • advocates for more transparency in license attributions: "Fish belong to all Senegalese, and it is only fair that all our citizens should know which companies, from which origin, have used our flag to fish in Senegal and sometimes even throughout the region". • "questions the government's proposal to suspend the fisheries agreement with the European Union. They explain how tuna quotas are allocated at regional level, and that the tuna that migrates through Senegalese waters "does not belong to #Senegal": "If there were no agreement with Senegal, European boats would continue to fish for this #tuna outside Senegalese waters, when they are swimming on the high seas or in the EEZs of neighbouring countries with which the EU has an agreement, and Senegal would receive no financial compensation"." • warns against "the development of a tuna fleet with the re-flagging of vessels of Asian origin [that] does not offer reassurance to those involved in the sector."
