“Egypt concludes seven deals for #greenhydrogen projects in SCZONE” March 15, 2024 - Ajsa Habibic “The Egyptian government has signed seven memoranda of understanding (MoU) with international developers to set up green hydrogen and #renewableenergy projects in the #SuezCanalEconomicZone (#SCZONE).” “The MoUs were signed on February 28 in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly as well as government agencies, including the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.” “During the ceremony, Hala Al-Saeed, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that the signing of these seven MoUs represents a new step for the Fund in the series of investment partnerships with major international companies to develop #greenhydrogenprojects in the SCZONE.” “Al-Saeed explained that the new agreements add expected investments, for the pilot phase, about $12 billion, in addition to about $29 billion for the first phase. The signing, held in the New Administrative Capital, involved Engineer Mahmoud Essmat and Mr. Florian Herrmann, Minister of State in Bavaria. The deal focuses on boosting cooperation in hydrogen energy. The declaration aims to strengthen collaboration in hydrogen production, technology, logistics, and scientific cooperation. It also encourages knowledge exchange between Egypt and Bavaria, supporting mutual goals of advancing hydrogen markets and promoting joint development projects. Both parties will establish a working group to coordinate and develop proposals for implementing the joint declaration. This group will also conduct dialogues and hold meetings with relevant stakeholders to set priorities and explore ways to achieve the declaration’s objectives. This agreement aligns with Egypt’s national strategy for sustainable energy, aiming to produce 42% of its energy from renewables by 2030. Egypt signs multi-billion-dollar deal with Maersk to build huge green hydrogen facility in SCZone The partnership between Maersk and Egypt to produce green hydrogen for maritime fuel was formalized on March 28, 2022. This agreement was signed in the presence of Egypt’s Prime Minister and includes collaboration between Maersk and several Egyptian entities, such as the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The green hydrogen produced through this project will primarily be used to fuel ships, contributing to Maersk’s goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2040 The agreement aligns with Egypt’s push toward becoming a global center for green energy production and export, with the aim of using the Suez Canal’s prominence to contribute to the decarbonization of shipping.
