There's one thing should really know about the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. And it doesn't involve Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen... 👇 For 20 years, DHL has handled logistics for the Formula 1 World Championship, delivering everything from race cars and tires to hospitality and broadcasting equipment at each race. In 2019, Formula 1 aimed for net-zero carbon by 2030, mandating DHL to help achieve this goal. Last year, DHL introduced alternative fuel trucks into their global fleet, reducing emissions by an average of 83%. This success led to doubling their alternative fuel fleet this season. Last week's discussion on the optimization of non-critical flows in Formula 1 proved to be quite timely. Critical flows optimization requires schedule changes and is subject to a myriad of out-of-hand factors, such as commercial, climatic, and race track availability. The 2023 race calendar is a prime example of this, with its erratic schedule and jumps between continents. However, I tried to approach this as a route optimization problem with two routes: one from factories to pre-summer races, and the other from factories to post-summer races. More specifically this is now a travelling salesman problem, often referred as TSP The baseline for the 2023 Formula 1 critical flows, including race cars, racing equipment, data servers, etc., resulted in 144,041 kilometers traveled and costing $436B while emitting 37,115B gCO2, all outside of the racetrack. Upon optimizing the calendar, the numbers significantly improved. Scenario 1 shows that the calendar could have traveled 73,252 kilometers, costing $208.5B, and emitting 17,497B gCO2, resulting in more than a 50% reduction in logistics costs and carbon emissions. However, this scenario may not be desirable as it would impact viewership, with the European calendar concluding prior to summer. Scenario 2, upon constraining the race calendar to have European races pre and post-summer, still shows a significant reduction in costs and emissions. With a total of 89,751 kilometers traveled, costing $265B and emitting 22,426B gCO2, this scenario, although ignores climatic constraints of race circuits, suggests that a 20-40% reduction in costs and emissions is possible. Let's continue to explore ways to reduce our carbon footprint and make Formula 1 a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly sport. Traditional logistics is a small sector in Formula 1 2023, dominated by DHL! With 24 Formula 1 events in 2024 the logistics is one key success factor. German DHL have been with Formula 1 for 20 years, and the partnership was renewed, once again, in February 2024. It is a multi-year extension. DHL is the longest-standing global Formula 1 partner. DHL transports 1,400 tons of high-value, 127.000 km air distance, Formula 1 freight to each race. 100 people work for DHL Motorsports. A DHL motorhome will be introduced for selected European races, equipped with solar panels, charging and recycling stations. Zero emission is the target. DHL have already 37 bio-fueled trucks involved in the F1-operation. It was a challenging year for DHL 2023, but the company still achieved annual target. Group revenue reached 81,8 billion euros and EBIT 6,3 billion, compared with 94,4 billion in revenue 2022, a record year. DHL have grown a lot in 5 years. In 2019 the revenue was 63,3 billion. The other logistics partner in Formula 1 is French CMA CGM Group, a Scuderia Ferrari partner. CMA CGM is very much a shipping/container company. As we are all aware, 2024 season of Formula 1 is on its onset and fans all around the world are gearing up for it. But behind all the glory, lies a marvel achievement performed by DHL (Official F1 Logistics partner) in arranging the Logistics of it. Point to point Air operations of entire set up is very much against the ethos of environment and is costly. With budget limits also in place this will leave the sport vulnerable to grow. In order to solve this problem, Formula 1 and the teams look their cargo in two ways: 1. Critical flows: High value and developed items like: Mechanical components, electronic components, Data servers etc. that will be travelling by air 2. Non-critical flows: Standard items such as: Pit crew tools, canteens, track-side housing, conference rooms, tires etc. Each team creates 5 sets of these standard items. A total of 150 containers (10 teams, each with 5 sets, each set in 3 containers) are then shipped before hand and then mobilised as the race calendar evolves. For the summer break, all containers return to their factories and resume operations during second half of the race calendar. In supply chain terms, this can be similar to the load sharing method where when one DC cannot solve the demand, the other DC fulfils it. In 2023, this is how the fulfilment happened for the non-critical flows: 1. Intra EU races: Set 1: One after another by road 2. Fly Away races (Outside of EU - by sea and road): a. Set 2: Bahrain - Saudi Arabia - Singapore - Brazil b. Set 3: Australia - Japan c. Set 4: Azerbaijan - Qatar - Abu Dhabi d. Set 5: Miami - Canada - Austin - Mexico - Las Vegas Over the past few days I have been pondering upon if there is an opportunity to further optimise this part of logistics with Non-critical flows. The costs incurred by F1 and their teams typically involves 3 components: 1. Fixed costs: Involved in creating sets of standard items. More sets imply more costs. (5 sets in 2023) 2. Transportation costs: (1. To & Fro flows from factory before & after summer break: More sets imply more flows 3. Race to Race: Direct flow between races) 3. Storage costs: Containers reaching the race location beforehand need to be stored in the warehouse. (In 2023 - around ~161 days of storage across fly away locations) Optimization: When optimised for number of sets of non-critical items: DHL could have done it with 3 sets benefitting teams in lesser fixed costs & fewer to & fro home flows (~170 days of storage in fly away locations): 1. Set 1: Intra EU - Austin - Mexico - Abu Dhabi 2. Set 2: Bahrain - Saudi Arabia - Azerbaijan - Singapore - Brazil 3. Set 3: Australia - Miami - Canada - Japan - Qatar - Las Vegas Please feel free to reach out for my approach. Kateyama is pleased to announce the technical partnership established with Pirelli for the 2024 season. The collaboration between Kateyama and Pirelli began in 2023 and allowed us last year to guarantee a high-quality service and assistance in the paddock to the single-seater teams who chose our Professional Track Days. Considering the results achieved with this #collaboration, we are proud to announce the renewal of the agreement for the 2024 season and the extension of the presence of Pirelli also in Professional Track Days dedicated to GT, Touring and Prototypes, as well as in test days open to Formula cars (as in 2023). As part of this collaboration, a Pirelli tire service station will be set-up in the paddock during most of our Professional Track Days taking place in the main European racetracks. Pirelli will take care of the transport, assembly, and disassembly of tires, assisting teams and thus facilitating their activities. With the renewal of this agreement, we also renew our environmental efforts to make our activities more #sustainable. Pirelli is committed to recovering used tires for future recycling, a project we deeply care for, which reduces the environmental impact in our test days.
