Major news that Paul Nakasone, the former head of US Cyber Command, will lead an institute at Vanderbilt University. We need more instances where practitioners get included in universities - true interdisciplinarity. Retired four-star general and former U.S. Cyber Command and NSA chief Paul Nakasone is set to lead Vanderbilt University's newly established Institute for National Defense and Global Security. “One of the things that really attracted me to Vanderbilt was the fact that it has a very strong belief in an interdisciplinary approach," he said. The institute, set to launch this fall, evolved from Nakasone's involvement in Vanderbilt’s annual Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats. “We had conversations about it initially, about whether this particular approach made sense. We love working with him. So, we started talking about it … Then gelled into an idea for how these things can reinforce each other," said Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. Nakasone brings to the institute his unparalleled experience in navigating complex challenges. “The only way that we were able to have success against all of those threats was the fact that we had a broad partnership with a number of different players — academia and industry and our interagency allies,” he noted. The new hub will “drive outcomes” and focus on recruiting fellows who can contribute significantly. This is the perfect way to integrate genuine practitioners into a university environment, providing tailored, high-impact learning opportunities for students and ensuring that universities are focused on producing relevant research. With the recent release of the #NIST #CybersecurityFramework 2.0, my team has seen many organizations working to process the updates and determine “what next?” This can be a tricky issue – especially in research environments where an open flow of data is required to support the task at hand. Specifically, when working with universities, I find that many security and IT teams focus solely on the security aspects of protecting the data vs what access researchers need to be successful. Research organizations such as universities thrive by promoting open and transparent research to attract brilliant minds – however, we know that they must also safeguard sensitive information. Balancing this issue can be complex and this is where we see many organizations create issues for themselves. I wanted to highlight a Success Story from the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division led by Plamen Martinov for balancing this issue. NIST works with organizations who have demonstrated success with using the #CSF to capture what worked and the value it brought to their team. 🎉 Exciting News! 📚 I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest journal paper, "The WACDT, a Modern Vigilance Task for Network Defence," co-authored with Craig Speelman and Peter Bouhlas. This work culminates our research at Edith Cowan University, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet of WA's Office of Digital Government Western Australia and The Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre. 🔍 This paper addresses a significant issue in the field of cyber security: the ability of network defenders to sustain attention to Security Event Information Management (SEIM) systems for prolonged periods. We introduce the Western Australian Cyber Defence Task (WACDT), which is a pioneering tool designed to simulate the cognitive load associated with SEIM threat detection. The WACDT enables us to measure the capacity of network defenders to sustain vigilant attention to virtual threats. The WACDT not only aligns with the evolving complexities of modern cybersecurity but also allows for the control of key factors that impact sustained attention performance (such as cognitive load, event rate, signal salience, and workload transitions). 🚀 Through our research, we've discovered intriguing patterns in vigilance performance, especially between static and dynamic trial settings within the WACDT. These insights are crucial for understanding how professionals maintain attention during prolonged and monotonous tasks, a common challenge in network defence. 🌐 Our hope is that the WACDT will serve as a valuable resource for the civilian human factors research community, providing an updated and validated vigilance task model.
