Thought-provoking fireside chat hosted by LINK Medical Research at #nlsdays in Copenhagen today, on the Future of Clinical Trials in Alzheimer’s disease. How can we manage the various conflicting trade-offs? Anne Börjesson-Hanson talked about the need for greater digitalisation of data collection and adoption of new technologies for simpler cognitive testing to increase participation - but as Patrik Åvestrand pointed out, we need to remember the people taking part: self-testing with digital tools can be highly stressful for many of these patient groups. Equally, clinical research is traditionally seen as a conservative industry, fearful of doing things differently in case it affects data quality, but as Gunnar Danielsson explained, the regulatory authorities are usually very supportive of sponsors being braver! They should try anything that could increase the study population size and ensure data quality - while keeping the study design focused on one simple question. No easy answers then - but the more we get people to discuss ways to overcome the barriers, the closer we can get to better outcomes.

In recent decades clinical trials and healthcare treatments and systems have become more personalised, data driven, person-centred, interconnected and multi-disciplinary. But how future ready are we for this rapidly changing landscape? This question was explored at the 2024 annual conference for ARCS Australia. Representatives from the Office for Health and Medical Research were present during the conference, showcasing the work of the Office through presentations around successfully managing change, regulatory pathways for phage therapy and non-animal technologies, workforce retention and snapshots of the future.
