Moves to reduce animal testing in Australia and all over the world will change future approaches to clinical research. This global trend will advance the use of non-animal technologies, such as organoids (tissue cultures that replicate organ function). To stay ahead of the curve, NSW Health has created the Non-Animal Technologies Network (NAT-Net), recently announced by the Honourable David Harris MP, Minister for Medical Research. Emergency Departments have significant scope for improvements but it can be challenging to test interventions in real-world settings. Professor Robyn Clay-Williams led a team to develop analysis models that can assess these intricate departments without disrupting the system's real-life functioning. Professor Clay-Williams was awarded a NSW Health Early-Mid Career Research Fellowship in 2017. This grant helped her establish her research career and played a major role in the application of cognitive work analysis in healthcare settings and in developing a novel tool that can be utilised globally in healthcare systems. More than 26,000 Australian babies are born premature every year. Dr Jonathan Paul, a University of Newcastle Senior Research Fellow, is on a mission to ensure more pregnancies reach full term. Since 2013, Paul has been part of the team developing a novel drug delivery approach to prevent preterm labour. Working within the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) as Co-Director of the Mothers and Babies Research Program, he has undertaken detailed analyses of gene expression and protein changes that occur when a woman goes into labour. The NSW Government has awarded $2 million to three outstanding motor neurone disease (MND) researchers, to better understand its causes, and to support people in NSW affected by the disease. Motor neurone disease is a rare, progressive neurological disorder that causes rapid degeneration of muscle activity and can impair walking, talking, breathing and general functioning. There is no cure for the disease. These Grants will fund research to help improve the wellbeing and health outcomes for people living with the disease, and drive advancements in diagnostic tools to improve rates of early detection and referral. The MND Grant recipients are: - Professor Dominic Rowe AM, Macquarie University. - Dr Rachel Tan, University of Sydney. - Professor Steve Vucic, Sydney Local Health District. Rural, regional and remote communities have greater access to clinical trials closer to home, thanks to a trio of clinical trial support units in Western, Southern and Northern NSW. Earlier this month, Minister for Medical Research, the Hon. David Harris MP visited Dubbo to announce the launch of the Western cluster unit which has already commenced or delivered 12 clinical trials in the region, with more than 200 new trial patients receiving care. The Clinical Trial Support Units are part of the Rural, Regional and Remote Clinical Trial Enabling Program, a project funded by the NSW and Australian Governments to deliver increased and more equitable access to clinical trials for patients in rural, regional, and remote NSW and the ACT.
