CEO/Founder @ The Patriot Group, Inc. I Executive Recruiter I Headhunter I Agency Owner I 30+ Years in Aerospace & Defense

Recruiters, do you specialize? I hope the answer is yes. I specialize in Aerospace/Defense Industry when those companies manufacture or build something. That is my niche, my sweet spot, my specialty. Do I deviate, yes but that is highly dependent on the situation. I spoke to a potential client today and this director said, they have such difficulty using agency recruiters because they do not have experience recruiting for their aerospace specialty. If I did not specialize, then I would not be able to differentiate myself from other agencies. You see, I've started and either sold or merged two aerospace/defense companies and that was before I started a recruiting agency, The Patriot Group, Inc. (TPGI) back in 20212. Recruiters, it pays to specialize. #patriotmethod #recruiting #defense #aerospace (Tap that bell 🔔 to follow me David Dickey, comments are welcomed.

By specializing and having a niche, it makes you more valuable to your employer and to your clients as well as to candidates. Do you agree? Mark Howland Jeremy Sisemore Linda Ferrante Chris Morgan

Yes - with the caveat that I have been the sole recruiter at more than one employer, and have/can hire just about any corporate position. I am a technical recruiter, and the last 5+ years I have hired a lot in the analytics vertical.

I consider myself a generalist, its my preference because I'm naturally curious and quick to learn new things. It also helps me be more plug and play as a resource for clients - I have a firm grip on recruiting fundamentals and process, but pivot easily to nuance in industry or vertical. If I were agency I'd probably specialize! That's a different game entirely. But not for me :-)

I agree, my specialty is Telecommunications, specifically in the Satellite/RF fields. Though I missed a job opportunity because they were looking for a high volume agency recruiter. I am excited about branching out into the financial industry. It is important to learn something new everyday.

Hi David Dickey - I loved your post, if someone is looking to change industries but has limited experience in said industry, what are some things they can do to gain experience and be hired into a new industry with limited experience?

Couldn't agree more David Dickey, Specialization is key to a smooth and successful hiring experience for both clients and candidates. The deeper your understanding of the industry you are in, the better service and market insights you can offer as a recruiter.
