Discover the thoughts of Carla Clamp of BDO South Africa as she examines the challenges holding women back in the continent’s mining industry and why it is imperative to identify and remove such barriers. “There is a whole lot of untapped potential in women that could be miners that is currently not being assessed or utilised. Breaking down the myths about the mining industry…. It is a great time to be a part of it!! This statement says a lot about how I feel as well, she summed it up perfectly! “My message is that now more than ever is the time to belong to the mining industry. Our presence is crucial because we’re transforming this industry and bringing it closer to society. We can create an industry that attracts a new generation of young talent, both women and men, offering them a place where they can develop and feel proud to belong. Celebrating Women's Impact in Australian Mining for International Day of Women and Girls in Science   In my role, I am grateful to be a woman who supports other women in the STEM industry, specifically engineering and mining.   When I have the delight to speak with women who are out in the fields on rural mines in the scorching heat of Australia (my opinion as a Northerner), it truly is a testament not just to the drive of the women in this industry, but also how far the industry has come!   The mining and resources industry is dynamic and ever-changing and women have been breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and reshaping the landscape of mining science in profound ways.   When researching how I could help spread awareness and celebrate women paving the way in this field, I cam across this blog entirely dedicated to sharing stories of women in mining Australia. One such title stuck out, ‘Don’t feel constrained to the more ‘traditional’ female roles’.    Being a mother of a 17-year-old daughter, it is days like this which I feel empowered to contribute to expanding the awareness of the more-than-ever diverse careers girls can achieve. It is so important for young girls and emerging women to have the freedom and flexibility to explore any avenue of interest which might birth into a life-long passion and journey. I am sure any fellow parent in my network would agree!   Some of the women’s stories on this blog are truly inspirational and I would encourage my connexions to go and take a read! Up next on IWiM’s International Day of Women in Mining event, we have our panel discussion 'Breaking Ground in Belonging' which will dig deeper into this year’s theme ‘I am Mining and I belong’.     Our panellists today are Chelsea Williams, Rebecca Peacock, Sura Alshear and Sushma Nainawat, with Kevin D'Souza, IWiM Advisory Council member, as moderator.     They all come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wealth of experience in the mining industry and represent our IDWIM 2024 sponsors: Sandvik, ArcelorMittal Mining, Kinross Gold Corporation, and Teck Resources Limited.    Some of their tips to foster belonging are:  1. Active listening can create an environment where people feel like they are heard and that they belong. 2. For women to feel like they belong in this industry, they should be given equal opportunities to lead and be authentic in their roles. Belonging brings out the best in everyone and impacts productivity. 3. Leaders should ensure they create a working environment built on kindness, authenticity and empathy. It is these seemingly small things that create belonging.   Do you have belonging stories and/or tips towards more inclusion of your own to share? These can be small and simple. 🌍 Empowering Women in Mining 🌟 : A Path to Leadership and Innovation The inaugural WiMSA Symposium was a powerful reminder of the need to transition from dialogue to action in supporting women in the mining industry. As Noleen Pauls, WiMSA board chairperson, emphasized, “We’ve come a long way... but we’re still talking about the same issues. This conference aims to change that by focusing on real solutions.” Dr. Nompumeleo Obokoh, CEO of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions, inspired attendees with her keynote address, highlighting the resilience and tenacity of women in mining: “We are the rocks, the unbreakable forces that shape the future... Let us commit to creating an industry where women are not just present but are leading, innovating, and transforming.” The discussions on career growth, understanding rights against gender-based violence, and the need for supportive structures like Thuthuzela Care Centres were crucial in shedding light on the challenges and opportunities ahead. It’s time for us to champion women’s access to leadership positions, where they can innovate and drive change. Let’s ensure that as we move forward, we rise together. Statistics show that women make up 8-17% of the mining Industry. This means that less than a fifth of the Industry is female. The Global Mining industry contributes a lot to the global domestic product. It's a BIG Industry. And we're at the center of this narrative because the Mineral Industry in Africa is the 2nd Largest mineral Industry in the world. Mining is a lucrative industry but, Unconscious gender bias is an issue in this sector. The reason people like us Tanzania Women in Mining and Mineral Industry (TWiMMI) seek to enhance the representation and development of women in the mining sector. We do all we can by providing training, tools and connecting women with financial institutions to help them access adequate capital to conduct mining activities reliably.
