For those wondering if the #incumbent #telcos have given up on taxing the rest of the #internet and society to fund their profits, we must thank them for their honesty! There very clearly - point two in their “strategy” for #eInclusion is #networkfees. No one should doubt that they keep trying to resurrect their cash grab. It seems it’s all they really have want, along with asking to be re #monopolised. It’ll solve all their problems… To quote their own paper which links to their completely discredited #fairshare paper directly: “2.Innovation in network financing mechanisms. To achieve connectivity goals, Europe and Latin America face a large investment gap. Telecom operators and public policy makers need to explore new or redesign existing formulas to facilitate network financing.” And they say the rest should pay for them. Of course having these new #fees in Europe would have the opposite effect on demand and inclusion and digitisation, but that’s not actually what they care about. Their strategy for “inclusion” is basically their strategy for everything, just repackaged. I applaud their chutzpah, lament the complete lack of ambition by only being willing to recycle #telcowelfare arguments. Telefonica have just published a new position paper on the relevant issue of Digital Inclusion, under the name "Digital divide: from the coverage to the usage gap". Connectivity is a fundamental pillar for driving the digital transformation of society and the economy, and so the digital divide has been traditionally an issue of access. However, time has shown that this was only part of the problem. The coverage gap has narrowed significantly in recent years. However, there are still people who do not use this connectivity, limiting their participation in the digital world. This tells us that where Internet access is available, there are other barriers to full digital inclusion that have not been given due attention. A paradigm shift has indeed taken place. It is therefore necessary to rethink eInclusion policies and initiatives in order to adequately address this challenge, targeting both the coverage gap and the usage gap. To this end, we have developed a new position paper in which we explore the causes of both gaps and propose a number of innovative strategies to address them. We also present the first output of our Digital Inclusion Compass. This article introduces the new position paper on Digital Inclusion.

Today, on International Women's Day, we celebrate the achievements of women around the world and call for more action to close the gender gaps that persist in many areas. One of these gaps is the digital divide, which affects millions of women who lack access to the internet and the opportunities it offers. According to a recent report, 37 per cent of women globally do not use the internet, meaning 259 million fewer women have access to the internet than men https://lnkd.in/gvMvkhwC . This is not only a matter of digital inclusion, but also of economic empowerment. Women who are online can access education, health, information and services that can improve their lives and livelihoods. But we also need more women to be involved in creating and shaping the digital world. Women are underrepresented in the tech sector, especially in leadership and decision-making roles. According to a 2023 report by the World Economic Forum, the percentage of women working in AI today is only approximately 30% https://lnkd.in/gE7UT2un. This is a huge loss of talent and potential for innovation. Diversity is essential for developing technologies that are inclusive, ethical and responsive to the needs of different groups of people. That's why it is important to support more women to enter and thrive in the tech industry. We can do this by mentoring, sponsoring, hiring, promoting and collaborating with women in tech. We can also advocate for more policies and initiatives that foster a gender-balanced tech ecosystem. Together, we can make tech a more diverse and inclusive space for everyone. Together, we can create a better digital future for all.
