During my morning Zwift (bike) ride, I was reminded of the power of WOM and how limited software attribution is at revealing a complete picture of buyer behavior. As I rode with 15K+ other riders a group chat began (viewable to all) discussing bike equipment recommendations for which one rider responded "I'm clicking the Buy Now button as soon as I finish this ride" after being recommended to buy the Wahoo Kickr indoor trainer. Then, other riders began posing questions to the group for buying advice — such as asking riders from Italy for best places to stay in Milan so they could complete their vacation bookings this month. I see these type of buying advice chat exchanges on nearly every ride (3X-5X/week) and it goes beyond bike-related conversations to include: consumer electronics, business travel, apps, and more. Talk about "dark social" -- this type of in-app (or "during entertainment") WOM simply cannot be captured without serious spy tracking software and/or violating privacy. Meanwhile, Wahoo will probably (incorrectly) attribute their $1299 sale to an organic traffic hit to their website -- which is precisely the attribution disconnect that businesses face every day when trying to track conversations and influence that are simply invisible to attribution software.
