The agenda for #DRD24 is here 📢 Take a look! 👇 We are happy to share the preliminary agenda for the Disaster Research Days 2024 (#DRD24) which will take place in #Vienna, October 8-10, and bring together the #DRR and #DRM community to showcase the latest research findings and innovative solutions to enhance societal resilience. The event agenda features keynotes and panel sessions covering these very topics, e.g., on how disaster research can help safeguard critial infrastructure and on building resilience against CBRN risks. #DRD24 is a joint event by #CERIS (European Commission) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)’s European Science and Technology Advisory Group (E-STAG). It will be co-hosted by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance (Bundesministerium für Finanzen) the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Education (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung), and the Disaster Competence Network Austria. I’m thrilled to share that our latest paper, “Weighing structural damage and social susceptibility: A decision‐making tool to perform longitudinal studies of geographically large hazard events,” is now available in the latest issue of Risk Analysis. This work, co-authored with my PhD advisor Prof. John van de Lindt, fills a crucial gap in disaster research by providing a robust methodology to select communities for post-event field studies. As climatic hazard events increase, it's essential to consider both damage and community-level social factors for long-term recovery. Our research aims to enhance community selection processes after disasters, ensuring interdisciplinary perspectives and highlighting inequity-driven recovery patterns. Special thanks to the other members of the field study team for their invaluable contributions to implementing this metric and decision-making tool following the Quad-State Tornado of December 2021: Wanting (Lisa) Wang, Ph.D., P.E., Shane Crawford, Guirong Yan, Thang Dao, Trung Do, Ph.D, P.E., Katie Harkins Skakel, Mojtaba Harati, and Chibuike Robinson Umeike. At the 60th anniversary workshop of the Disaster Research Center (DRC) at the University of Delaware, I presented on the relationship between Emergency Management and Information Technology. Using a metaphor based on Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, I explored the challenges and potentials of crowd-sourced data to inform emergency decisions. We are at a critical juncture in emergency communication. Through my speech I urge researchers in social sciences, disaster studies, and crisis informatics to seize the opportunities presented by the current digital revolution and fully harness the potential of "humans as sensors". 🌪️ Building Resilience: Lessons from Simulating Tornados 🌪️ This week's technical note highlight is a groundbreaking study published in the ASCE Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities. The paper, titled "Application of Multidisciplinary Community Resilience Modeling to Reduce Disaster Risk," is a collaborative effort by Wanting (Lisa) Wang, Ph.D., P.E., John van de Lindt, Blythe Johnston, Shane Crawford, Guirong Yan, Thang Dao, Trung Do, Ph.D, P.E., Katie Harkins Skakel, Mojtaba Harati, Tu Nguyen, Chibuike Robinson Umeike, Silvana V Croope, and André R. Barbosa. Their research aims to assess and improve community resilience by studying the devastating 2021 "Quad-State Supercell" US tornado outbreak. Utilizing the Interdependent Networked Community Resilience Modeling Environment (IN-CORE), they simulated buildings' damage and recovery processes, providing valuable insights that can guide future disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts. Grateful for the opportunity to present our recent #sealevelrise research at #EGU24 last week!😀🥱🖥️🌃 This work responds to two common questions being asked by coastal practitioners and policymakers: 1) how high do coastal protections need to be modified to avoid increased coastal flooding? and 2) how frequently would coastal protections be overtopped if left unchanged? Using a joint probability approach for a global tide gauge dataset, we measured recent changes in the heights of high tide exceedance levels, and quantified the individual contributions of MSL, tides, and surges. The Geospatial Summit brought together relevant partners to discuss innovative geospatial tech solutions to address these global challenges. Commonwealth through #CCFAH, #Commonsensing and #UVI are involved in understanding vulnerabilities and enabling countries access global financial support.

Recovery is an important but often overlooked phase in the disaster life cycle that begins immediately after the threat to human life has subsided. The 2025 Preparedness Summit provides an opportunity to ask questions and develop answers as we consider roles and responsibilities, and resources needed to undertake the crucial step of recovery.
