Day 2 at the Eko Waste Summit ♻ Yesterday was marked by enlightening discussions and impactful insights from esteemed speakers. The discourse began with the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy delivering a comprehensive overview of the transformative power of circular economics. With a focus on statistical evidence, the presentation emphasised the growing momentum among sustainable organisations dedicated to fostering an eco-conscious ethos. @TitilayoOshodi, the Special Adviser, further enriched the dialogue by delving into the nuanced complexities of emissions within the circular economy framework. Her engaging exchange with representatives from innovative circular businesses underscored the tangible progress being made towards repurposing waste materials into valuable commodities. This interaction not only highlighted the potential for economic growth but also underscored the imperative of sustainable practices in shaping a resilient and environmentally responsible future. 🌟 🌎 In 2024, one of our primary goals is to continue supporting social enterprises leading the way in climate action, with a particular focus on those located in the Global South – a region disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. Here’s how ➡️ 🗑️ Greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to the way we extract and use materials – as well as how we manage our waste. Despite this, less than 20% of our global waste is recycled, with the remaining 80% ending up in landfill (Source: Developmentaid/Statista, 2023). Bendito Residuo is a #NESsT portfolio enterprise supporting companies in Chile to sustainably manage their waste and reduce their environmental footprint. To date, it has trained more than 2,000 people in sustainable waste disposal in Santiago and 12 regions throughout the country. 💬 “It's not about doing completely different things; rather, it’s about doing things differently,” PAULA Rojas López, CEO of Bendito Residuo, explains. ♻️ Successful waste management starts with awareness. Bendito Residuo works closely with corporate clients to give them visibility into how their waste is recycled and processed. Bendito also supports its corporate partners to develop waste strategies that comply with Chilean regulations. Francisca Leiva, Head of Environment at Casaideas, a client of Bendito Residuo, shares: “The more we learn about the topic, the more we care and take responsibility. Do you know the difference between a circularity rate and a recycling rate? Put simply, one takes into account ALL the materials that are used in our economy (a much larger scope which includes fossil fuels) whilst the other is about "waste" or "end-of-pipe". The former allows us to focus on primary raw material extraction and what happens to it but both rates are important in guiding our transition to a more circular economy. Our 2024 Sustainability Report shares how we are living our purpose of making a #sustainablefuture possible together, every day, and here are just some of our achievements:  • We achieved a 5% reduction in our GHG emissions and generated enough electricity from landfill methane capture to power around 37,000 average Australian homes.  • We recycled 430kt of paper and cardboard, recovered 104ML of waste oil, and recycled and shipped 23kt of plastics to third parties, diverting valuable materials from landfill.  • Women now make up almost a quarter of our workforce. • We held 1,555 community education sessions across the country, engaging with Australians to raise awareness about recycling, resource recovery and sustainability. A massive privilege this morning to present to over 100 Senior Government Officials representing around 40 African Countries as part of the fantastic work being delivered by the Sustainable Markets Initiative. This was a brilliant opportunity to showcase our upcoming training module on waste management and recycling and how the work we are delivering in Glasgow contributes towards tackling climate change. Key themes of the upcoming training module will include: 1. How Public Private Partnership working has facilitated investment in new treatment infrastructure, minimised the amount of waste disposed at landfill, and established more effective and efficient services. 2. The role of new recycling services to capture additional recyclable plastics,  cartons and containers to boost recycling performance. 3. The importance of effective public engagement to improve service participation in recycling services.
