Let's break it down. ___________ Let's draw a basic analysis first: Jio Cinema: - Subscriber base: 141 million Paid & free users, 221 million MAU. - Strength: Reach beyond urban areas, affordable pricing. - Weakness: Limited original content, less established brand (Jio cinema is not as popular as Jio sim) Disney+ Hotstar: - Subscriber base: 38.3 million - Strength: Content powerhouse, original content, sports rights - Weakness: Premium pricing can limit reach in cost-sensitive markets. _______________ Now let’s cover two major unspoken angles of this merger 1. The Bundle of everything for entertainment 2. The Ripple effects on competitors 1. Bundled content - Jio now has IPL, World Cup, Big Boss, TV serials everything that a common Indian household watches. - It now has all the big rivals under one cloud - Disney and WB. - Jio now comes in a bundle with Telecom + Sports + Family content +Regional originals + Traditional media brands = All-in-one package. - Disney has already seen a massive success with bundled content offering with Disney + Hulu + Espn. So we can now expect pricing with and without the Ad tier. - With IPL coming this month, the bundled offers going to hit the roofs and it’s going to be a nightmare for other streaming services. 2. The Ripple effects on competitors - There are no other streaming services in India that offer this much-diversified content. This will make others struggle a lot. - If Jio decides to keep prices low then other platforms will also be forced to expand ad-supported tiers for pricing. - Competitors will rush to form alliances and may come up with some unexpected partnerships. - General interest platforms will struggle, so there’s no other option rather than focusing on hyper-niche content, there’ll be a surge in regional content across all major languages. - There’ll be a big bidding war for sports rights. ___________________ Let’s just give a casual review on other streaming platforms - Netflix - They are still confused state with the password-sharing feature. That’s already eating them. - Amazon Prime - Prime is like a local food carnival, you have to pay Rs.100 as an entry fee and then Rs. 500 for each stall you visit. Too much gated content. I think one of them should partner with SunNxt which has nearly 20million+ users and Aha which is now emerging among youth audiences due to its regional content. Everyone is trying to gauge how it will affect the pricing and the subscriber base. Santosh N, managing partner of D&P Advisory presents his views on the merger, in this article by Christina Moniz. He opines that - 📺The merging of the two will have some disruptive consequences in terms of content and pricing power. 📺 Hotstar is the best among the homegrown streaming apps. It had a strong content game even before the merger, even though it lost some marquee content in the last year or so. 📺 Jio is the player with big pockets and aspirations, but it is still new in this space and so doesn’t have any major original content and the app is still not as good as Hotstar's. Santosh expects the new conglomerate to follow the "Freemium Approach", considering the IPL has been made free for the second consecutive season this year. According to him - 📌 Jio is chasing growth and subscriber numbers rather than profitability, and they may be able to sustain losses for a while. I just came across this Amazon miniTV's ad on Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform. In a strategic move that blurs the lines of competition, Amazon MiniTV's advertising presence on Hotstar, a direct competitor🤼, is both bold and intriguing. This cross-promotion💡 not only showcases confidence but also suggests a dynamic understanding of the modern viewer's preferences. By reaching out to the audience on a rival platform, both brands appear to acknowledge the diverse habits of viewers, positioning themselves as versatile and consumer-centric. But this is not the first-time that this has happened. In 2016 as well, Amazon Prime had a big brand launch on Disney+ Hotstar (then just Hotstar). To compound their woes, Disney Hotstar had to bid farewell to all HBO content, including the beloved GOT. In the blink of an eye, they lost 20 million subscribers. To make matters worse, rumours circulated that Walt Disney, their parent company, contemplated divesting Disney Hotstar. However, amidst this chaos, a determined faction within Disney Hotstar opted for a bold pivot. They believed that cricket, with or without the IPL, would continue to be their primary acquisition channel for 2023. The Asia Cup streaming became free, and the ICICI World Cup found its exclusive home on Disney Hotstar and extended free streaming to mobile users. Despite the tumultuous backdrop, Disney Hotstar maintained its leadership in the OTT space by subscriber numbers. In response to the changing landscape, the platform transitioned from a subscription-based model known as SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) to an ad-supported model called AVOD (Advertising-based Video on Demand). It was a pivot born out of necessity. Disney Hot Star’s strategic shift towards lower ad rates paid off during the recent World Cup, with a record-breaking viewership of 43 million for the India vs. New Zealand match. It marked a stark contrast to their earlier high CPM rates during the subscription model phase. Today, they charge INR 199 for Indian matches and INR 40 for non-Indian matches, resulting in an average of INR 142 - 150, attracting more users and advertisers. Nonetheless, in the unpredictable world of business, nothing is set in stone. The day after this triumph, a Bloomberg report shook the industry to its core. It suggested that Walt Disney might relinquish control of Disney Hotstar to Reliance Industries. While not finalized, the timing raised questions. The negotiations remain shrouded in secrecy, with an impending announcement. Why is Reliance interested in Disney Hotstar? Exclusive World Cup rights until 2027, rich regional content, and iconic brand associations such as Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. If this deal materializes, Reliance stands to gain substantially.
