It's Endometriosis Awareness Month - an opportunity to increase understanding and show support for the 176+ million people worldwide affected by the debilitating condition. Endometriosis occurs when tissues similar to the lining of the uterus grow outside of it, known as endometrial lesions. These lesions cause severe pain and can impact fertility. Despite affecting up to 1 in 10 women, the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms is 8 years. Thankfully there has been some promising R&D happening in the space over the past year, here's a two that caught our eye: 1. Using MRI to non-invasively spot endometriosis: The lack of validated biomarkers for endometriosis had previously made it hard to develop targets for imaging and diagnosis. But in August 2023, a team of researchers from China made a breakthrough. They developed a contrast agent modified with a drug called bevacizumab. The drug targets a protein called Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), which is often present in people with endometriosis. This is a hugely promising development in the non-invasive diagnosis of the condition. Read the full study: https://lnkd.in/ggKUmA-v 2. Endometrial lesion detection: In January last year, researchers published a paper about a new, easier way to spot endometrial lesions using quantitative radiomics. The results showed that the radiomics model they developed could accurately classify the lesions as benign or malignant. This suggests that using MRI radiomics alongside clinical information could help doctors diagnose endometrial lesions more accurately. Time to Prioritize Endometriosis! That’s the call from three leading researchers (Linda Giudice, Andrew Horne, and Stacey Missmer) and they’re right. It’s about time to make some progress. Published in Nature Communications, they outline the scope of the problem, highlight the pain afflicting tens of millions of women, and call for policy and research to focus on addressing this unmet need. (https://lnkd.in/edzDeYxs) We would add a fourth bullet point under the call on their graphic, that “millions of lives would be improved with”: => A safe and effective non-hormonal drug; suitable for long-term use SLBST Pharma is working hard to make this goal a reality in the next few years! #endometriosis #nonhormonal #womenshealth #SLBSTPharma

𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 The global kidney transplant market, valued at US$ 81.0 billion in 2023, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.3% from 2024 to 2031, reaching US$ 116.4 billion by the end of 2031. This growth is driven by an exponential increase in kidney disorders and rising healthcare spending. Kidney transplants are generally preferred over lifelong dialysis due to their lower risk of fatalities, better quality of life, lower treatment costs, and fewer dietary restrictions. Companies in the kidney transplant market are incorporating technological advancements in transplant procedures, such as robotic-assisted and laparoscopic transplants, to minimize post-surgery pain, reduce complications associated with open surgeries, and ensure quicker recovery times. Endometriosis is a challenging condition of reproductive-aged women, causing problems ranging from chronic pain to infertility. It is characterized by an estrogen-dependent stroma and endometrial glands found predominantly, but not exclusively, in the pelvic compartment. Due to the necessity of surgical visualization for a definite and clear diagnostic, a precise evaluation of the prevalence and incidence of the disease is hard to obtain. This disease is characterized by a prevalence estimated at 5%, peaking between 25 and 35 years, and an annual incidence among women aged 15–49 years, evaluated at 0.1%, generating thus significant healthcare costs (according to a study conducted by Simoens et al., the average annual cost per woman was estimated at €9579 Concerning the environmental factors, it has been suggested that exposure to elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxin, phthalate esters, bisphenol A or organochlorinated pollutants and perfluorochemicals may play a role in the development of endometriosis. Some theories regarding the mechanism of action by which these pollutants are involved in initiating the disease include generating oxidative stress which can modulate the immunological activity or alter the hormonal homeostasis, however, further research is needed to shed light on the exact pathways of the intervention of these toxins regarding endometriosis.

🌟 Celebrating a brand new publication in the International Urogynecology Journal on International Women’s Day 🌟 https://lnkd.in/drvp75ZB Today, on International Women's Day, I am excited to announce the publication of our latest research in the International Urogynecology Journal. Our study marks an important step forward in understanding the effects of phosphodiesterase inhibitors on the lower urinary tract in women. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial with 24 healthy women, we found that tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, decreased opening urethral pressure while maintaining voiding parameters. These findings suggest potential clinical implications for women with impaired voiding and prompt further investigation into its clinical relevance. As we celebrate women's achievements today, this research highlights the importance of continuing to explore and understand women's unique physiology and health needs. Thank you to Troels Riis, David P. Sonne, MD, Ph.D., and Niels Klarskov, MD DMSc, for collaborating on the study and writing this article! #Urogynecology #ClinicalPharmacology #Innovation #InternationalWomensDay

A fibroid uterus refers to the presence of non-cancerous growths, known as fibroids, within the uterine walls. These growths are composed of muscle and connective tissue, varying in size and number. Commonly affecting women during their reproductive years, fibroids can lead to symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or rectum. The exact cause of fibroids is unclear, but factors like hormonal fluctuations and genetics play a role. Diagnosis involves pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and occasionally, MRI scans. Treatment options range from medication to surgical procedures, depending on the severity of symptoms and the patient's reproductive goals. While some fibroids are asymptomatic and require no intervention, others can significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Research into understanding the mechanisms and effective management of fibroid uteri is ongoing, aiming to improve the well-being of those affected. #FibroidUterus #UterineFibroids #WomenHealth #ReproductiveHealth #Gynecology #FibroidAwareness #Healthcare #MenstrualHealth #MedicalScience #HormonalBalance #MRI #Myomectomy #Hysterectomy #BenignTumors #ResearchInHealth

AccendoWave - A Pain #Data Company Endometriosis can decrease quality of life due to severe pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety and infertility. Individuals with endometriosis can experience debilitating pain that prevents them from going to work or school. Enhanced awareness could lead to earlier diagnosis, which may slow or halt the natural progression of the disease and reduce the long-term health care burden of the disease, but there is no known way to prevent endometriosis, and currently there is no cure. According to Donnellan, the average endometriosis diagnosis period is eight to 11 years, and the only way to officially diagnose a patient is with an exploratory surgical laparoscopic procedure. The disease, she explained, is stealthy when it comes to traditional diagnostic procedures. A Top 4 Global Health Equity Solution and Top 15 Global Remote Monitoring Company, AccendoWave, benchmarks objective brain wave pain data (specialty, gender, age) and has nine #pain databases: Emergency Department, Maternal Health, Oncology, MSK, Medical Surgical, ICU, Women, Adults, Seniors to eliminate bias, improve outcomes and reduce health care costs. If desired, AccendoWave can also create customized pain databases for partners that can be accessed on the Datavant platform. https://lnkd.in/gHBwEpqC

Osteoporosis, translating to porous bone, unveils a concerning reality as we witness a shift from the norm in bone density. Bone mineral density serves as the diagnostic standard, revealing that by age 60, approximately one in 10 women may face osteoporosis, escalating to six or seven in 10 by age 90. Contrary to common belief, this isn't exclusive to women, as one-third of hip fractures afflict men. The risk for osteoporotic fractures looms, standing at 40 percent for women and 13 percent for men at age 50. The silver lining emerges in research proclaiming that genetics contribute less than 30 percent to osteoporotic fracture risk. Lifestyle interventions thus take the forefront in preventing this ailment. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advises osteoporosis screening for women aged 65 and older, potentially starting earlier for those at increased risk. Amidst the search for solutions, a spotlight falls on proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs, like Prilosec and Nexium. Despite their popularity, studies suggest an alarming association with increased hip fracture risk. Astonishingly, many users, exceeding recommended durations, face unjustifiable prescriptions for conditions like indigestion. The repercussions extend beyond fractures, encompassing pneumonia, kidney failure, stomach cancer, and cardiovascular disease. The magnitude of PPI prescriptions, surpassing 100 million annually in the U.S., prompts a reevaluation of their widespread use. In our quest for alternatives, lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, smoking cessation, and a plant-based diet emerge as proactive measures against acid reflux. Beyond PPIs, other drugs like antidepressants and corticosteroids reveal potential links to hip fracture risk, urging us to tread carefully in the realm of medication. In conclusion, the journey to combat osteoporosis involves not only medical interventions but a holistic approach addressing lifestyle factors. Let us remain vigilant, advocating for prudent use of medications and embracing healthier choices to ensure skeletal well-being for generations to come. 👨⚕️ Doctors refer patients to me for osteopenia and osteoporosis, and within two months, we successfully reverse this condition! #OsteoporosisAwareness #BoneHealth #MedicalResearch #PPIs #FractureRisk #PreventiveMedicine #LifestyleInterventions #HealthEducation #ScienceCommunication #DrugSafety #OsteoporosisPrevention #PublicHealth #ScientificFindings #EvidenceBasedMedicine #HolisticHealth
