Chief Legal Officer at Acheron Trading ⚡️ Co-Founder at LDU 🚀 Crypto Lawyer and Startup Growth Advisor
As a lawyer that's not too senior and not too junior, I am often asked what's more valuable to focus on if you want to succeed in this career - knowing the right people or knowing about the law. My answer, quite predictably, is: 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵. Legal knowledge is foundational, especially when you are junior. It's the base upon which we build our arguments, guide our clients, and navigate complex cases. It's the reason we spend countless hours pouring over books and cases, honing our understanding of statutes and precedents. No amount of networking can help you learn this core knowledge. However, the law is not practiced in isolation. Relationships, built through years of dialogue and interaction, are equally crucial, especially as you take on management and leadership roles. Knowing the right person can open doors to opportunities, provide valuable insights, or help you learn about a decision-maker's leanings, or an opponent's strategy. Legal knowledge doesn’t have the same impact here. So, let's not make this an 'either-or' situation. Master the law, yes, but also invest time in building and maintaining professional relationships. Both dimensions complement each other, and together, they shape a successful legal career 💪 #legalcareers #lawyers #lawstudents #legalprofession

🔍 Legal Evolution: From Classroom to Boardroom 🔍 During my early days in law school, I was introduced to the intricate dance of statutes, cases, and legal principles. Fast forward to today, and I find myself navigating the complex maze of corporate legalities, ensuring businesses operate within the bounds of the law. A few key takeaways from my journey: Growth Hack: Embrace continuous learning. The legal landscape is ever-evolving, and staying updated is not just a necessity; it's a survival tool. Personal Experience: I once worked on a case that seemed straightforward on the surface but unraveled into a web of legal intricacies. It taught me never to underestimate a situation and always be prepared for surprises. Brand Story: Working with diverse companies, I've seen how legal strategies can shape a brand's narrative, turning potential crises into stories of resilience and integrity. Success Narrative: Every legal victory, big or small, has been a stepping stone, teaching me something new and reinforcing my passion for the law. Job Openings: I'm always on the lookout for fresh talent to join our legal team. If you're passionate about corporate law, let's connect! Hiring Experience: One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is mentoring young lawyers, helping them transition from academic knowledge to practical application. Interesting Stat: Did you know that 70% of businesses face legal challenges due to non-compliance with ever-changing regulations? It underscores the importance of a proactive legal strategy. To all my fellow legal professionals and business leaders, let's continue to uphold the sanctity of the law, ensuring it remains the strong pillar upon which businesses can thrive. #LegalJourney #CorporateLaw #ContinuousLearning #LegalChallenges #BusinessCompliance

Improving the Practice of Law, One Lawyer at a Time. Award Winning CEO | Managing Partner Coach | Lawyer Whisperer | Published Author | Dot-Connector | Presenter | Law Firm Growth Strategist | Passionate Horsewoman🐎
The transition from law school to private practice attorney is a big one. Bigger, even, than back when today's partners graduated. The undergrad and law school experience is prescriptive. If you study, follow the lessons, and prepare for the tests you will succeed. Practicing #law is nothing like school. To be an effective #lawyer we must think on our feet. Nothing prescriptive about it. Law firms would benefit from keeping this in mind when hiring younger talent. They require a significant investment. They must be trained on critical thinking, #business acumen, communication skills, executive presence, organization, time management, leadership, client development, and more. Firms that continue to struggle with associate retention are neglecting to fully commit to the development of their newer legal talent. Sure, it would be great if all new hires were fully prepped and ready to hit the ground running, but this hope is not grounded in reality. Want to improve recruitment, retention, client satisfaction, culture, and profitability? Invest in turning your recent grads into successful #lawyers. #lawfirms #employeeengagement

"One of the major challenges for junior lawyers entering the legal profession in the coming years is navigating the varying generational perspectives at work." According to Legal Cheek. Typically Gen X lawyers prioritise long term career growth and stability, valuing independence and autonomy. Whereas, Gen Z are more likely to seek new opportunities and challenges early in their careers, valuing inclusive leadership styles and guidance from management figures. https://buff.ly/4bniy5G How is your law firm dealing with the varying generational perspectives? #legalrecruitment #legaljobs #lawfirm

Are you sure you only want to consider in-house roles? At least 15% of the junior to mid-level attorneys (2-5 years experience) who reach out to me for assistance only want to consider in-house opportunities. While I can understand the desire for a different work environment, choosing the right time to make that move is crucial for longterm career development. The sweet spot for moving in house is usually after 6+ years' experience ON AVERAGE. In-house, you're not generating profit for the company while getting trained on how to be a lawyer; you're a cost center meant to share your expertise and provide answers to tough questions. Certainly, there are some more junior in-house roles out there, but these can often be likened to "alternative track" law firm roles: less sophisticated work, fewer resources (if any) for training and development, and lack a pathway for advancement in the organization. It can be more advantageous to make a move to another law firm that can offer you the right training to be part of those strategic advising conversations, to get exposure directly with clients, and to act as lead associate on your matters. Then you'll have the skills you need to hit the ground running and actually be successful in your dream in-house role. Not to mention, being at a strong firm can offer built-in exit opportunities with its clients, if you are there long enough and in a position on the firm team to make a personal impression. It is better to build your resume toward the goal of a successful and strategic move in-house, rather than desperately pulling the escape lever as soon as possible. In-house attorneys: do you agree with these considerations? What would you add or change? #inhousecounsel #inhouselegal #lawfirmlife #lawjobs #jobchange #lawyerlife #legalrecruitment

Have you come to a fork in the road? I went to law school because I believed that a legal education would provide me with a wide range of career choices. Although I started on the traditional law firm path, I ended up in a career I never imagined existed, and I use my legal education every day. What kinds of opportunities should a lawyer consider? It takes time and a concerted, systematic effort to explore all options and find the right opportunities. So, it’s important not to limit yourself. Be flexible and open regarding possibilities, such as opportunities with corporations, governmental agencies, public interest groups, or organizations of different sizes and types, or in areas of practice other than those with which you are familiar. Furthermore, you might consider other geographical areas, including suburban, or outlying communities. Also, as I did, look beyond traditional law practice to other opportunities where your legal background could be of value. New ways of delivering legal services spawned alternative provider organizations, and more businesslike law firm models led to an increase in executive and management positions inside the firms themselves. There also are opportunities for lawyers not engaged in the traditional practice of law but where a JD is a distinct advantage, such as with vendors of new products and services to law firms and in-house legal departments--especially in tech. Additionally, there is an increased demand for lawyers in procurement, contracts administration, compliance, and data privacy protection roles. Lawyers find attractive careers in legal recruiting and coaching firms and as sales representatives for vendors to the legal profession, such as insurance, law practice technology, class action settlement administration, and more. Or, you can do something completely different. For example, one of my law school classmates is an international art dealer. What other types of interesting career choices have you or your JD friends pursued? #lawjobs #legaljobs #jobsearchtips #legalrecruiting #jobsearchtips For more insights into job search strategies, the legal industry, and the California legal job market, follow SeltzerFontaine LLC, and connect with me and ring the 🔔 at Valerie Fontaine.

Following on from last week's question covered in our Q&A with LexisNexis UK - are there any preferred areas of law for in-house roles - today I'm sharing our tips and insights on... 💥 Does it matter which law firm you trained with? 💥 🔸 It can do. This will depend on the organisation and their needs, whether there is a specific skill set they seek for an in-house counsel role. They may consider the ranking, size and specialisms of the firm to that end. 🔸 However, while the reputation of the law firm where you trained can have some influence, it is not the sole determining factor in securing an in-house position. 🔸 Several other factors come into play when companies are considering candidates for in-house roles including experience and expertise, practice area, soft skills and cultural fit. 🔸 It's essential to showcase your individual contributions, skills, and experiences. 🔸 Tailor your application and interviews to emphasise how your background aligns with the specific needs of the in-house role and the company's industry. 🔸 Demonstrate what and how you can contribute to a business. If you're thinking about making the move and would like a confidential discussion, we'd love to hear from you.
