I have precisely a month. I'm looking out my window at a snow covered road and dreaming of the sunny warmth of San Diego—the place I will be next month. Why San Diego? It's the home of Social Media Marketing World—the annual industry conference my company hosts. This is year eleven. And truth be told, I am feeling the pressure. Why? Well first, I own the company and need to fund the event, whether people show up or not. Good news is we're expecting 2000 marketers. Second, I'm always the opening keynote. I work really hard to make sure each year I provide a road forward for our industry. Third, my staff are working hard making a million things happen—printing signs, finalizing sponsors, coordinating with dozens of speakers, arranging travel for our team, and a whole lot more. So, simply said it's crunch time. Here are a few things I do whenever I'm stressed about what's about to happen: #1: I pray. Yes, I am a person of faith. I pray for wisdom and patience. #2: I place others before me. I make sure my staff is always first. I never want to be a bottleneck. So I place supporting them above myself for this season. #3: I get plenty of sleep. I clocked in at 9 hours yesterday! #4: I practice. I never take for granted how important my opening keynote is to our customers. I spend countless hours refining and practicing my delivery. I currently have 96 slides to present in 45 minutes. #5: I plan for what comes next: I'm always thinking about what happens after our big event. On that front, I've been having conversations with people who have done what I'm about to do. I find that super helpful. So, what do you do when it's crunch time? Let me know.
