Yesterday was World Cancer Day. This time 4 years ago I was coming to the end of my radiation therapy. I was so, so grateful for the staff at The Wesley Hospital and GenesisCare who were incredible. My experience with GenesisCare was particularly impressive. They treated me like a person, not a patient, and that made a world of difference to the way I could navigate my treatment journey as part of my life. This photo below is the day I finished radiation. It was an amazing feeling adding a pink fingerprint to the tree, and having the opportunity to mark the milestone mattered. 💕 I am always so grateful for 👩🏻🔬medical research that continues to develop more effective treatments 👨🏽⚕️nurses who were caring and kind 👩🏼⚕️doctors who took the time to explain treatment options 👱🏼♂️administrative staff who kept things humming and helped me manage schedules Funding medical research is vital. New developments in life-saving research are only possible through investing in smart people who are dedicated to their field. Imagine if our tax dollars could be used even 0.1% more efficiently and that efficiency dividend was donated to cancer research instead? That’s a tidy $229,000,000 we could provide Australian scientists to help treat - and one day cure - this diabolical disease. Did you know that over 7.4 million people in the UK are living in cancer care deserts, located more than 45 minutes away from their nearest radiotherapy centre? Travel times have emerged as a major concern for radiotherapy patients. At Ergéa, we are dedicated to enhancing patient access to diagnostic imaging and cancer care across Europe and we are deeply aware of this challenge. We are proud to have supported the recently released Radiotherapy UK report, which sheds light on the crisis in radiotherapy services across the country titled 'Equity of Access to Cancer Treatment'.   Having in consideration that the incidence of cancer is projected to rise by a third to over 500,000 a year by 2040 – average of 2,000 cancer patients a week, Radiotherapy UK is urging the government to analyse the reasons behind the significantly lower uptake of radiotherapy in the UK compared to other comparable countries and put a plan in action to close the care gap and ensure access to treatments closer to home for cancer patients.
