Last week, I had the pleasure to attend the #GlobalFashionSummit in Copenhagen. Enlightened to see industry leaders, innovators, and activists come together with a shared vision of creating a more sustainable future and the urgent need for systemic change within our (still) unregulated industry. Key takeaways for me include : 1- Collaborative efforts : the importance of partnerships across the supply chain was emphasized. Collaboration is key to driving systemic change and achieving sustainability goals 2- Bold and purpose driven decision making : the cost of not acting is becoming higher than the cost of acting. Dare to take uncomfortable decisions to drive systemic change and enable long term gains. 3- Innovation in materials and regenerative approaches : the fashion industry has a lot to learn from other industries (tech industry) 4- Data as an enabler Thankful for some particularly inspiring speakers and leaders, working hard on inspiring others through action. The best leaders do hard things… To make it easier for others to do the right things. And Ritual’s Katerina Markov Schneider and Lindsay Dahl embody this commitment better than anyone. These leaders know how to put up a good fight: - for the best quality ingredients in their vitamins - for ingredient traceability - for their commitment to sustainability Kat, the CEO, is a force of nature. Spend three minutes with her and you realize how closely she lives in alignment with her values. It shows up in the way she eats, in what she wears, and in how she moves. Her motivations stem from a deep, deep love of her children. She’s committed to using business to create a better world for them. Kat had the vision to hire Lindsday to be Ritual’s Chief Impact Officer and create the conditions for her success at the company. Before Ritual, Lindsay spearheaded policy and advocacy work for Beautycounter. She pushed the beauty world to rebuild itself around principles of transparency, trust, and clean ingredients. Our team at PlanetFWD worked with Ritual earlier this year to assess their carbon footprint and support their journey to becoming a CarbonFree certified company. This process is not a check-the-box type of effort. It takes incredible vigilance for a company to live up to this standard. And here’s what I want you to know: A brand’s commitment to sustainability is only as strong as the leaders behind it. Kat and Lindsay are doing the hard work even when nobody is looking. In doing so, they’re making it easier for consumers to make smarter nutrition choices. And they’re setting a new standard for other companies (and leaders) to emulate.

One of my main takeaways from Sustainable Brands this year is that we cannot do this work alone!!! Sustainability work inherently requires cross-functional collaboration because it is multi-faceted, multi-layered, and systemic by nature. Collaboration requires excellent communication, shared goals, aligned incentives, mutual trust, and a deep respect for those with whom we work. Through all the panels and sessions of this conference, the spirit of collaboration is alive and well, perhaps thriving, even in the face of adversity and all the pressures of capitalism and business-as-usual circumstances we each go up against in our day to day operations. While here, I've had the good fortunate to connect with so many wonderful people working with some of the largest brands, retailers, and sustainability service providers. The common theme from my conversations is that without partnering with internal functions beyond their own, along with their suppliers and vendors, they are unable to have their desired impacts towards more sustainable and regenerative businesses. But what does this look like❓ 💰 It looks like sustainability teams asking finance teams to explore decarbonizing banking and investments 🧴 It looks like competing CPG brands coming together to co-create recyclable packaging that benefit the industry and beyond 🤝 It looks like brands and retailers incentivizing change throughout supply chains by setting shared goals and supporting supplier's transitions to more sustainable practices and materials In the words of Matthew Mayes from Sway today, "more than ever, we see the need for collaboration." ✨ Amen!! ✨ Thanks to everyone in this community for showing up with optimism, kindness, and open minds. I've been nursing incredible back, hip, and neck pain all week thanks to recurring musculoskeletal challenges, but your energy, spirit, and knowledge shared throughout this conference has absolutely made persevering through the pain worth it. Wrapping Up The Consumer Goods Forum Summit: Key Takeaways I wanted to share some highlights from the recent Consumer Goods Forum Summit that took place last week in Chicago. Here are my takeaways: 1. 🧑🌾 Regenerative Agriculture: This is the game-changer for the food industry. It’s all about restoring ecosystems and improving soil health to drive sustainable growth. Proud of Danone leading the way. 2.💡Sustainability and Innovation: We’re seeing amazing innovations in packaging, supply chain transparency, and circular economy models. These are crucial for sustainable development. 3.📱Digital Transformation: Embracing digital tools and AI is a must. We saw some great examples of how tech can boost customer experience and make operations more efficient. 4. 🎯 Consumer-Centric Approaches: Understanding what consumers want and need is at the core of strategies. Personalization and ethics are more important than ever. 5. 🤝 Collaboration and Partnership: Working together across industries is key. As if beauty was not difficult enough for consumers to navigate at times, science-washing has entered the chat. Similarly to green-washing, where sustainability efforts are inflated to fit confirmation bias, science-washing occurs where science is either being used beyond what evidence shows, without appropriate credentials or in instances where science cannot give the answer. Caught up with Suzy Goulding, Head of Sustainability at MSL, APMEA during her India visit. She leads strategy development and steers sustainability efforts for MSL clients. She is on a mission to help clients make sustainable changes with conviction, and communicate their actions in a way that is honest, transparent, and credible. She was in India for talks in Bengaluru and Delhi apart from key note address at Praxis 2023, a PR and corporate communications summit held in Chennai. She spoke on "Greenwashing: The Risks and Opportunities of Communicating Sustainability" at Praxis. In a thought provoking presentation, Suzy emphasized the importance of intent when it comes to sustainability endeavors. She reminded us that not every action requires a amplification, advocating for a more discerning approach. She also highlighted the perils of greenwashing, describing it as the practice of making misleading or unsubstantiated claims about the environmental benefits of a product or service. "Greenwashing can tarnish a company's reputation, erode consumer trust, with serious business repercussions," Suzy cautioned. Honesty emerged as a recurring theme in Suzy's address, especially in the context of setting sustainability goals. She acknowledged that sustainability remains a relatively new terrain for many organizations and urged them to approach it with integrity. Suzy drew a clear line between ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and sustainability, underscoring the importance of distinguishing these terms accurately. Suzy commended the law in India mandating that companies allocate 2% of their expenditure to corporate social responsibility (CSR). She also shared her perspectives on Apple's new sustainability film and found inspiration in Patagonia's remarkable journey. We also discussed the crucial role of the media in reporting sustainability matters.
