*At COP29* , three primary issues dominated discussions: *climate finance, the future of fossil fuels, and carbon markets.* Climate finance emerged as a contentious topic, particularly regarding how much *wealthier nations should support poorer countries* in addressing climate change and transitioning to clean energy. A notable proposal suggested *committing $300 billion* annually by 2035 to aid developing nations; however, skepticism arose, especially from India, which viewed this as an insincere political gesture rather than a true commitment to climate justice. The debates at COP29 underscored the complexities of global climate negotiations, emphasizing the need for *genuine collaboration and equitable climate action.* The urgency for decisive action is critical, as the *responsibility to advocate for a sustainable future falls on us all.* https://lnkd.in/gJHRNDJi

As COP29 approaches, it's crucial for all nations to reach a consensus on a robust climate finance target that addresses the needs of developing countries. Aiming for an ambitious yet attainable figure, such as exceeding $1 trillion annually, can foster trust and cooperation. Ensuring fair contributions from all major economies, including emerging ones, is vital to combat climate change effectively. Prioritizing grants over loans can prevent exacerbating the debt burdens of vulnerable nations. #ClimateFinance #COP29 #GlobalCooperation #Sustainability #ClimateJustice https://lnkd.in/eXgyU5H6

🌍 COP29's $300B Pledge: A Historic Step, But Not Enough to Tackle the Climate Crisis 🌍 While the $300 billion pledge at COP29 marks a significant milestone in global climate negotiations, it's just the beginning. Developed nations must recognize that trillions are needed to meet climate targets and address the root causes of climate change. 🌱 This pledge alone won't be sufficient without swift, transparent, and accountable action. Key steps include scaling up climate finance, prioritizing loss and damage funding, and fostering innovative financing models. The urgency of the climate crisis demands that we go beyond promises and take bold, effective action to protect vulnerable nations and ensure a sustainable future. 🌏⚡ Read the full article by Dr. Malle Fofana from GGGI Africa here: https://lnkd.in/dixkwPbG #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateFinance #GlobalClimateGoals #SustainableFuture #LossAndDamage #ClimateChange

COP29 has ended, with a new collective quantified goal that replaces the $100 billion annual target with more ambitious goals: 🟢 $300 billion annually by 2035 for LMICs 🟢 An overall climate financing target to reach “at least $1.3 trillion by 2035” While this is a step forward, it still falls short of the needs and demands of vulnerable nations–those already bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. As the global community continues to work toward scaling climate finance, adaptation tools like #CHART are essential to supporting governments and communities in protecting health in a rapidly changing climate. #COP29 #CHART #ClimateHealth https://lnkd.in/gJjVBwRX

As global leaders debate climate finance and emissions reduction, we all have a role to play. Retrofitting your home is a powerful step towards reducing energy consumption, cutting costs, and contributing to a more sustainable future. With CO2 emissions hitting record highs, local action is just as critical as global agreements. Let's work together for a greener, more energy-efficient Ireland. 📊 Read more about COP29 and how you can make a difference here: https://lnkd.in/eJvaywV4

At #COP29, nations committed to increasing climate finance to $300 billion by 2035, a step that Michael Wilkins, Executive Director and Professor of Practice at the Centre for Climate Finance and Investment at Imperial, calls “a disappointingly small step, but one in the right direction.” Joeri Rogelj, Professor of Climate Science and Policy at the Centre for Environmental Policy, stresses the importance of deeper emissions reductions, stating, “Every country has to deliver emissions reductions that are as deep as they can possibly be.” With global temperatures rising and fossil fuel use at an all-time high, Rogelj emphasises that every fraction of a degree of warming makes life on earth more dangerous, urging nations to take urgent action to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Climate finance will be the focus in #COP29 negotiations coming up this November. Ocean-climate solutions can deliver up to a 35% reduction in the global carbon emissions gap, but these projects are well underfunded around the world. As COP29 draws near, it's crucial that the financial mechanisms mobilized for supporting adaptation, mitigation and climate resilience in vulnerable coastal communities emphasize the need to engage private finance in advancing achievable ocean-based climate actions, such as the development of the #blueeconomy. 🌊 The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on #climatefinance is set to replace the $100 billion USD commitment of developed countries channeling financial support to developing nations, and Parties are expected to reach a collective agreement on the NCQG by the end of COP29. 🌍 To this end, Research Assistant Joshua Joseph Pangelinan reflects on what we can expect from COP29 in a recent Sustainable Ocean Alliance article ➡ https://lnkd.in/epph7dK9

The UN Climate Change Conference (#COP29) has reached a consensus on international carbon market standards, potentially saving $250 billion annually in #climate plan implementation costs. This development comes as UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell warns of climate change's growing economic impact, citing GDP losses of up to 5% in many countries. "The climate crisis is a cost-of-living crisis," Stiell emphasised, highlighting how climate impacts could amplify global #inflation. The agreement on Article 6.4 establishes crucial framework rules for international carbon crediting projects, marking a significant step forward after years of negotiation deadlock. https://lnkd.in/eP6gmp_C #COP29 #ClimateFinance #SustainableFinance #CarbonMarkets

We’re pleased to see progress at COP29 with the finalisation of the rules for international carbon markets under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. This breakthrough allows countries to trade carbon credits. A positive step forward in our collective efforts to tackle climate change. https://lnkd.in/eVkrHByJ #COP29 #ClimateAction #CarbonMarkets #ParisAgreement

Very timely piece on the need for a radical overhaul of global climate governance. The annual COPs have become renegotiation platforms for states and corporations that lack the will to do what is needed rather than effective institutions that help to reduce GHG emissions. We need to start afresh and create 'a completely new diplomatic initiative to introduce speedier, more effective ways to curtail climate change'. Keywords should be implementation rather than renegotiation; smaller, more frequent meetings focused on solving specific climate-related problems; bringing on board organizations that are now isolated (climate, health, agriculture, energy etc), and accountability for states and corporations who fail to miss targets. #climatechange SEVEN - University of Amsterdam

https://wp.me/p8cDQ4-dR9 COP29: Will more finance for climate action be put on the table ? As COP29 arrives in Baku from November 11th - 22th, 2024, the need for more climate funding has never been more crucial. With previous climate conferences delivering more than a trillion dollars in investment, the spotlight is now on increasing financial commitments, particularly from wealthy nations to developing countries.
