As the football regular season gets underway, I’m starting to realize that the rigors of training camp is a lot like building a business. Let’s dive in ⤵️
Last week, I recorded this video offering up advice and inspiration to college football players who are in the thick of training camp. I spent five years playing college football– and I still get flashbacks from the dog days of camp… the 6 am runs followed by meetings and lifts and drills and more meetings until it was time to go to sleep and wake up to do it all over again. It could be brutal, and sometimes, it felt like it’d never end.
As I watch this video back, I’m consuming the content from a different context. I’m no longer a student-athlete in the middle of camp, but I am an entrepreneur entering his fourth year of business at Scarlett Creative Co. My fourth season. And in many ways– the advice I was offering is just as applicable to my situation as it is to the student-athletes’. Let’s dig deeper…
1. Rome Was Not Built in a Day
Say it louder for the people in the back!! In both football and business, growth is a process. And it isn’t always easy to be patient. When you set out to build something, part of the process is laying the foundation. It isn’t glamorous. It isn’t pretty. At times, it can be a straight-up GRIND. But that’s what it takes– day by day, rep by rep. And eventually, you’ll have created something powerful.
2. Focus Less on the Outcome
In my experience, the best athletes and the best business leaders are process-driven. That’s why we’re always talking about “HI-QUALITY” at Scarlett Creative. Just like football, it’s about controlling the controllables. We can’t always control what clients we get– but we can ensure that every piece of content we produce is hi-quality. Then when an opportunity arises, we let the content speak for itself.
3. You’ll Never Know if You Never Try
This one’s all about taking calculated risks. You’ve gotta balance belief in yourself and your business with some good timing. The past three years have been full of moments where we took steps forward because we bet on ourselves. (right, Caroline Hall)
Lessons learned on the football field were never really about football. It’s always been bigger than that 🦅
Community Builder. Creative Entrepreneur. Capital Investor.
It’s mid-August, and that means college football training camps are in full swing! ⛺
Took a minute to reflect on young B.Scar’s college days and offer up some words of wisdom to the college guys who are currently in the trenches. Regular season is just around the corner... Focus and finish! 🦅

How to Write the Activities and Additional Information Sections of the Common Application:
For students in a hurry, the Activities section of the Common Application appears to be a fill-in-the-blank. However, rushing through it is not a good idea. The Activities section is the foundation upon which the entire application structure is built! It’s an essential and critical piece of the applicant’s holistic picture.
There are only ten slots and 300 characters total to tell the admissions rep why each activity matters and how it furthers your story. It’s important to think about why an activity matters. Is it more important to share that you led the team in goals or that you started the Compliment Box on your soccer team to counteract the competitive vibe between players? The answer depends on you so we’ll decide that together!
When a student has more than ten activities, we use the Additional Information section strategically to expand on their interests.
