Teaching academic writing to PhD students at Indian School of Business, and our first session was called "AI and Me". It helped set the tone for the 11-session course. - We looked at what AI could help us with, and what it couldn't. - We discussed how we "learn through writing" and "write to learn," so outsourcing that function to AI would mean a loss of learning. - We examined two of last year's assignments and talked about which one AI might have generated. The only real way to tell was by WRITING STYLE. Assignment 1 was mostly AI because it simply answered the questions by ticking the boxes. The style was dry, dull, and sounded incredibly similar to five other assignments I had received. It demonstrated comprehension of the topic, but did not go any further. Assignment 2 may have used AI, but it was impossible to discern because the author's voice and style were strong, and the resulting text was engaging and asked questions of the reader that made us reflect further on the topic. It demonstrated that the writer had a critical stance on the topic and had engaged in analysing and evaluating the situation (highest rung on Bloom's taxonomy of learning). - In general, the consensus seemed to be that gen AI kind of made everything sound the same, much like heavy-handed copyeditors have been known to do. - Editing tools and Lit Rev AI tools seemed to be more useful at this stage. AI in writing causes more harm than benefit to research students. Even though it appears to have the potential to improve writing efficiency at times, nonetheless, it limits the writing abilities of the students. The personal touch, originality, creativity, depth of understanding, and critical thinking are all consistently absent from AI-generated writing. I tested the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and other AI tools for academic writing. I found that AI-generated writing often failed to meet the standards and expectations of academia. AI tools also generate fictitious references that research students might be unaware of. Research students should disregard AI in academic writing. The less they use it, the more they develop skills and confidence in writing.
