Through special education, all students are given the opportunity to achieve their educational goals, reach their full potential, and succeed in life. Special education is the responsibility of our education system to meet the needs of students who need special instruction, even if they have the intellectual capacity to benefit from instruction in a general education classroom (with some adaptation). These teaching approaches support the unique needs of each student and are delivered within the general framework of the mainstream school curriculum. The philosophy of special education is that individuals with disabilities have gifts and talents to share with society, but their strengths must be identified and developed early in life. Special education plays an important role in the lives of children with disabilities. The main goal of special education is to help students with disabilities become as independent as possible and reach their full potential. In addition to improving academic achievement, special education services help students develop social and life skills. Principals, Special Education Directors, and School Districts: Special education teachers, general education teachers, and parents should be working together to education students with disabilities in the "Least Restrictive Environment ("LRE"). Students with disabilities should be educated to the maximum extent with students who are not disabled. The 9th Circuit has established the "Rachel H" test to assist in determining whether the student's placement is the LRE. The Rachel H test includes consideration of: 1. Educational benefits in regular classroom supplemented with appropriate aids and services; 2. Non-academic benefits of interaction with typical peers; 3. Effect on teacher & children in the regular education classroom; and 4. Costs of providing the supplementary aids and services necessary in the regular classroom. Make sure to provide a thorough analysis for each of these elements next time you are determining the placement of a student. #specialeducationlaw #specialeducation #education #schooldistricts

National Special Education Day, observed on December 2nd. It commemorates the first federal special education law enacted following the landmark 1971 Mills v. Board of Education court case. This Mills case ruled the denial of publicly funded education to children with disabilities as unlawful, leading to the 1975 Education for All Handicapped Children Act, which in 1990 evolved into the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). K-12 education system -> IDEA ensures that eligible neurodiverse students have access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment, and it requires the creation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each neurodiverse student. When neurodiverse students enter postsecondary education, the protections offered by IDEA shift to those provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Unlike IDEA, which provides individualized support and modification to ensure success, ADA and Section 504 focus on ensuring access and prohibiting discrimination. In order to meet the diverse needs of children and utilize their potential to the highest possible extent, the philosophy of education must be based on these basic principles; 1. Equal does not mean same. 2. Each student is a unique and important personality 3. All children can benefit from an educational program suitable for them 4. Educational experiences designed according to the particular needs of each child significantly improve their learning ability and psychosocial development 5. The inclusion of children with different physical, intellectual, and behavioural characteristics increases the quality of education for all children with or without disabilities and special needs (Clough, 2000a; Clough, 200b)

It's been a wonderful first few months of teaching our new BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education and Care degree! 🎓 First-year students' #EarlyChildhood degree modules include: 👉 The Developing Professional Practitioner 👉 Keeping Children Safe: Safeguarding and Child Protection 👉 Learning, Development and Pedagogical Theory 👉 Introducing Self-Regulation One of the other modules they've been attending is Principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Equality, equity, diversity and inclusion is a thread that runs through all our modules because understanding children’s different characteristics is crucial when supporting #children, families and communities. This module is a foundation module to support students' understanding of #individuality and meeting children’s individual needs.
